2008 2.7 TDV6 turbo actuator seized/turbo replacement?

Hello all,

I’m brand new to this forum and also new to owning a Range Rover, so Hi and I hope someone can help me Smile

I recently purchased a 2008 RRS 2.7TDV6 with a few issues. Most of which I have managed to solve at a reasonable cost and with little effort!

Now I have most of the little issues solved, I’ve had the car diagnosed and came up with the following fault codes;

P132B-22
P138E-22
P132B-21

From what I can find online with simple searches this is an issue with the actuator, i have seen some guides to free off the actuator rod but unfortunately I can’t get mine to budge!

I have gave the Rod a gentle tap to the point I actually knocked the socked off the ball, after doing this I can see the piece which goes onto the turbo is very freely moving, so there must be an issue with the opposite end (the end that can’t be seen).

After messing around for an hour I managed to get the joint back together.

Now when I turn the ignition, there is a tiny judder in the rod so I can see it’s trying to move but it seems jammed good and proper!

Is this a turbo off job? From what I can see it seems impossible to get to the actuator behind/on top of the turbo?

One other issue that you may be able to help with while your here, cold starting is a nightmare, glow plugs were replaced 18 months ago, it’s been off the road for 12 months, is there a module for the glow plugs or just the 2 relays in the engine bay fuse box?

1. Try adding wynns vvt cleaner to the fuel tank (purple bottle) This may free the turbo up

2. Only the 2 relays activated by the ecu.

3. check the resistance of the glow plugs, and check there is power at the black and brown plugs on the top of the engine.

4. if its not the glowplugs, it could be the injectors

Will check your other suggestions when I next work on it, after messing around with it all day and achieving nothing today, I’ve now given up for a few days!

Andy, just a thought... is the actuator on this electronic, motor operated?

When the linkage popped off I could move the turbo end really easily so I’m thinking it must be the actuator end that’s not moving?

It is electric. And it moves on ignition on and off. (To stop it seizing and as a self test)

How can you be sure the turbo end is moving? I think your mistaken.
The furthest inward part is the turbo.
The motor will be very free as it’s a stepper motor

I’ve tried to upload a photo I’ve got off Google to try and explain what I mean.

If the photo is visible, I actually knocked the joint apart from the but I’ve circled In yellow and I could move the “ball” part which goes into the turbo very freely, I took the heat shield off from behind the passenger wheel, looking from that view the part which goes to into the turbo moved back and forth with easy so I’ll assuming it’s the opposite end seized?

Ok, well that's the first time I heard of that happening.

Was the ignition on or off ?

If Off it should be free
If ign on, the motor will fight you to move it to the required position

I tried with both the ignition on and off thinking I might be able to help it move. By the look of the one I can see in the picture it looks like both the rod and the connection to the actuator are steel, from the service/MOT history it looks like it’s been parked up for over 12 months... maybe could be seized the opposite end 🤷🏻‍♂️.

I can hear the motor trying to work under strain. As you will know the trouble is there’s no room to do anything! 😂

The first time I looked there was no movement what so ever and after spraying a load of WD in there it now judders, so hopefully it can be resolved without having to lift the body.

I’m away for a couple of days now for work but I’ve taken on board what you’ve said and I’ll make sure I tried it with the ignition off.

I've never seen the actuator sold speratly (assuming you could replace it in situ!)

A number of people do replace the turbo, body on.
I think you need to remove the exhaust, and make a tool up.

I would recomend these guys. They have done plenty of landrovers!
