Is Oil Dilution a problem in 2018 onwards SDV6s

Hi All

Am considering moving from my 2016 SDV6 into the facelifted L494 Mk 2(2018 onwards).

Oil dilution is well documented in the 2014-2017 model years (the L494 Mk 1) SDV6 engine.

What I would like to know from owners of MY2018+ L494s with the SDV6 engines, is if the MY2018+ SDV6s suffer from the same issues?

And same question goes for the petrol engines fitted with GPF (,petrol equivalent of the DPF)?

Cheers

Oil dilution is a software issue, not a physical one. LR's "fix" was just to rewrite the algorithm that assessed oil dilution based on driving style. That's because the oil itself isn't tested by the ECU, it just makes a guess based on how it thinks its been driven. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Thanks RRSTDV8...I was hoping they made the DPF close coupled to the engine/turbo like it is in the Velar.

But then are people driving around with diluted oil?.. did LR increase the sump volume for oil from 6 to say 8lt?

I think the reality is that oil dilution is not as big a problem as it has been portrayed. It's certainly not increasing the amount of liquid in the sump by a litre or two.

As for changing the location of the DPF, I doubt it.

Ultimately, the oil dilution issue is one cause by people driving an inappropriate vehicle for their driving needs. If you're not able to regularly drive for a decent length of time at decent speeds, you're going to have DPF issues. A petrol car is probably a better option in a city environment, assuming an EV is out of the question. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

On the contrary...Location of DPF definitely makes a difference.

As mentioned the RR Velar is closely coupled and driven same as the the SDV6.

A vehicle should be fit for purpose... .. the fact is the DPF on the RRS was poorly designed and positioned to maximise heat reaching the DPF to enable exhaust gases to get upto temperature for passive regen.

I drove a 63 plate Q7 for 4 years with no issues regarding early / short service intetvals.

The GPF will petrol vehicles will require regen cycles too and no doubt if similarly positionef and if same process for active regen is used (pumping fuel into piston) will probably result in oil dilution.

Aye, wasn't there a bulletin released by JLR that said a combination of poor DPF position and v short trips that caused the problem? Ferrari F430 Spider F1

As to your original question about affecting 2018+ cars, not sure I'm afraid. Ferrari F430 Spider F1

Yes, the location of the DPF makes a difference but your question was whether they moved it. And I think the answer to that is "no". You can't just go moving items as big as a DPF and putting them close to the engine without some major changes elsewhere.

As for a 63 plate Audi, my RRS is a 12 plate, so just a year older, and it doesn't suffer from early / short servicing intervals either. But both are Euro 5 and the oil dilution-affected vehicles are Euro 6, so they aren't comparable.

A RRS is absolutely fit for purpose. It's purpose, however, isn't as a city car. Wink 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Affects older cars too - I've been back to the dealer 3 times with my MY16.

Hi Prashan

Did they do any investigation? If so what did they say?

I got mine booked for next week Tuesday. Oil change and investigation..(hopefully).

Hi Ash - they just replaced oil and filter. Not great but fixed the issue until next time. MY16, 3.0D HSE Dynamic, Barola Black, TV, Rear Entertainment, Opening Pan Roof, Meridian
