120K miles on L320 - worth purchasing a warranty?

I’ve recently purchased a late 2009 (2010 facelift model) Range Rover Sport. It’s done 120K miles and has been decently looked after as far as I can tell (FSH + belts changed at correct interval etc.). It does have some issues including a strange knocking from the rear over small bumps (suspect/hope just bushings need to be replaced).

If anything catastrophic would happen to the engine or another major part, I think I may be screwed, however.

For a highly comprehensive warranty covering all components, you’re looking at around £1800/year. There are cheaper alternatives out there, but this covers suspension, all engine components, all electrical components, automatic gearbox and clutch, etc. The age and mileage of the car is another factor in the pricing.

What do people think? I know no one has a crystal ball but keen to hear any opinions, or if someone has decided to purchase a warranty themselves.

I will say that I’m absolutely loving the car!

Hi its what ever you feel most comfortable with, you could save that money into your own repair pot if nothing goes wrong you'll have a nice pot for upgrades or something else, there loads of horror stories out there of costs to repair to be fair i dont think there many motors now that are cheap to repair when they go wrong.

I agree with all Richard has said. I knew all the possible problems with the RRS and still bought one! A breakdown within 6 months wasn’t a good start but now after 13 months she’s relatively fault free and the sleepless nights are less.

Going back to your question the sceptic in me would ask will they pay out if the engine or gearbox went bang? After all it’s just an insurance policy and we know the get out clauses they have.

One question I would ask of the policy is as with car insurance is there a percentage repair cost versus vehicle value guide they use? This gets a lot of cars written off.

Personally I’d keep the money in a fund for repairs should they happen, but that’s just me.

On the positive side they are great cars and I love mine even though I’m fixing something every week😳 keeps me busy👍 Steve

A lot comes down to how good your garage is. If they service them properly, and you drive them sufficiently, then they aren't as bad as people fear. Go to a LR dealership for servicing and repairs and it'll spend more time with them than on your drive as they're hopeless. It'll also cost twice as much for the work, just to add insult to injury.

Use a decent indie, drive the vehicle enough to get everything warm and working properly and you're halfway there. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Thanks everyone. I think I’ll put the money aside and keep my fingers crossed. As has been mentioned, if I dodge any major repair bills, the money can be spent on some nice upgrades.

While I’m far from competent, I have no issues with attempting any DIY-able fixes/maintenance also.

DrRob - thank you for the suggestions - I really appreciate it. I have a very reliable garage here that I’ve used for a few years - not the cheapest, but they make up for it in quality!

I would also say no to a warranty, especially if you are prepared to DIY, as you said. The good thing about LR products is that there is plenty of useful information out there to enable you to DIY.

As above, just keep a bit of cash aside for parts, should the need arise. Kev

LR specialist? If not, find one. A good garage can service anything but a good specialist knows the non-service stuff that needs intimate product knowledge. Thumbs Up 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

A good indie is a must, i know when you have found a mechanic its hard to not use them but the RRS is a different beast, a good RRS indie will save you more money than a good honest mechanic trying their best.

I’m in a similiar place as you Vermont_Jack.... bought a 2011 autobiography with 116k miles. Cambelt changed & decent service history. I’m booked in for a ATF and diffs and transfer oil change tomorrow with a guy called Bodsy on here who has come highly recommended. But reading some horror right ups on engine problems but fingers crossed for the best! Thanks
Liam

Yes, you recommended him & Bristol transmissions. I was booked in with BT but I just messaged Bodsy out of chance and he was actually coming to Bristol for what ever reason so worked out perfectly! Thanks
