RRS 3.0 question I have read for hours

I know this has been on many posts and I have read many of them and got to a point where I can't find the answer, I have a friend selling his RRS SE with 77k and its in great condition, been serviced but last few years by a normal garage, it's missing a few extras I would like but the condition of the car makes up for this. It's a 10 plate with the later dash.

I have read too much and am now unsure as to buy it as I have read so much about the cranks letting go, so I then started to look at warranty options I could buy and maybe get a reduction on the price of the car to offset some of the cost of a warranty. I have yet to read of a warrany company that would "for sure" cover me if the crank did let go. Has anyone got a recommendation for a warranty that will give me what I need? Have I just read too much and the crank issue is not as bad as I am now thinking?

If anyone can help that will be great, I was all set to tell him I would have the car as it ticked all that I needed. BTW I am driving a Disco 3 2.7 and only looking to change as his RRS is mint, I use it for towing the horse box occasionally, then across the odd field / lane when out shooting.

I am stuck on the fence so will take your advice, please.

Hi and welcome, if you look at the max miles thread 7 out of ten of the highest mileage is the tdv6 2.7l, some say save your money to fund your own repairs, others have had a warranty paid for the crank others the warranty have not. Its a case of what do you feel most comfortable with.

how worried have you been about the crank in your current D3

or failure of its oil pump

or Torque convertor failing

All cars have there faults and the RRS shares the same as a D3 or D4 but all other brands do as well,
if the SE looks good to you go for it just keep a slush fund in case Question Exclamation Question
you will never know whats around the corner

WD used to look good for cover but they have stopped selling now, I would go the own slush fund option

Hi Nigel, my vehicle is a 2010 3.0 with very similar mileage to yours, it's had a recon' engine via my warranty due to suspected crank issues. The warranty from Motoreasy cost me £800 for the year with no contribution costs, it definitely covers crank failure and I'd be financially knackered without it. If you can budget for that then it's piece of mind should the crank issue arise. Thumbs Up

Hi Nigel.

Welcome. I am quite new here too and 6 months into 2012 MY 3.0 SDV6 ownership. I used to own a RR Classic but RR Sports are new to me and whilst I can tackle some small jobs, I am not as experienced or confident as lots of the guys on here (who have been really helpful with the technical stuff) Smile

My car has 79k on it now and the crank was one of the issues that gave me sleepless nights. The rest of the car is pretty mint and its had all the regular servicing and maintenance, belts done, manifolds done, no expense spared etc. which was all documented by Land Rover specialists when I bought it. So the records gave me some reassurance that the car had been well kept.

All I have done is change the front bottom arms which were clonking a bit. A gearbox mega flush is also on the cards for peace of mind on the torque converter front.

I also had all the existing fault codes checked, cleared and re checked a month later and that was clear of anything serious.

However, There has been some reassurance on here about the crank actually letting go and putting that into perspective given how many cars are out there and how often it happens but for peace of mind I had the oil changed just to look for any shiny particles and signs of something in the early stages of breaking up.

Nothing was found in the oil but at the same time I am considering buying some form of warranty just to be sure. I am also going to make a point of getting the oil changed more frequently just to keep an eye on things.

I am not worrying about it so much now and I am just enjoying the car. I've had BMW's, Merc's, Porsches etc kick me in the nuts in terms of bills so you can never really have 100% security. Pete
