Loose steering?

Hi all - apologies if this has already been covered: I’d appreciate any links to relevant threads if it has.

I’ve a ‘57 plate TDV8 and something isn’t right with my steering. I’ve had the wheels checked and they’re in balance, but still I’m getting steering shake when driving over pot holes / rumble strips, and there’s a knocking from the front passenger side occasionally when [slowly] driving over bumps.

Are there known issues with the front axle / steering - and any checks (and fixes / adjustments) I can action myself or ask a local trusted garage about?

Thanks,
Duncan.

I'd look at lower wishbone arm bushes next. If it is them then the perceived wisdom here is to change the whole arm rather than just the bushes. Robin

As Robin says, check your front lower arms. The rearmost bush wears prematurely.

Also a common problem is the lower steering shaft universal joint. They stiffen up over time and give play in the steering and wandering.

Only use a genuine part for replacement - aftermarket ones are known to be absolute rubbish. Kev

I would also check the front anti roll bar bushes. I had similar symptoms to you and also suspected lower wishbones but on inspection there was no obvious play but as soon as new ARB bushes were fitted the clunk disappeared and everything felt nice and tight again especially over bumpy roads. 2010 TDV8 - current - my first RRS, loving it so far......
2005 Cayenne S - handling defied physics and what a sound, so sod the mpg!
1995 Disco TDI- surprisingly reliable, shame about the peeling dash & other trim
Lots of other non 4X4's in between times.........

That’s all great advice, thanks all. The car is booked in in a couple of weeks time so I’ll get these and any other parts that others may recommend in the interim, checked.
