United Kingdom 2006 Range Rover Sport Supercharged Java Black

I just don't get the point of it. It seems more like a status symbol than sensible. Cashing in on the defender name.

I'd quite like it with a v8, it's nice and clean for my uses which will no doubt get it mucky. But it'd still be a glorified suv in my hands. All the people who would push it to its limits seem unhappy with it

United Kingdom 2012 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Orkney Grey

The new Defender will get as much off road use as most of the old Defenders sold in the last few years of production will do. Most are used as commuting vehicles and "life style symbols".

The new Defender will go places the old one couldn't even dream of. That's the sad reality of it. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Looks like the New Defender comes with guaranteed brown-pants moments as well!

Skip to the 50min mark for brake failure/malfunction, KAK scary!!!

Yeah, that is scary. Couldn't see if it was a brake failure or just the engine stalling and him not getting it restarted. As it was whizzing backwards quickly, I'd guess it's a stalled engine.

There have been examples of the ZF gearbox stalling the engine in Discos and RRSs before - we had an example of it in Les Comes last time we were out there. Shouldn't happen but I think the lock up clutch locks up as the system thinks it's going well and then you suddenly stop the wheels and the lock up clutch doesn't disengage in time.

No doubt if he'd had a more appropriate tyre for the conditions, the Defender would have walked up that track. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

The problem is that people automatically hate any iconic replacement, as it's new....despite the fact that by almost all calculations, the original was a god awful car (I know from experience). Terribly noisy and uncomfortable to drive on any surface, unreliable (Unless you are a mechanic), easy to steal and above all else, not actually that good off road, compared to many other modern equivalents. The only thing it has in its favour is the nostalgia.

Which admittedly, JLR are looking to cash in on very successfully. But how is that different from Porsche using the "718" name, or VW continuing to redevelop the Golf for countless iterations...

I will be the first to agree that the new one is hugely overpriced compared to something like the Disco Sport, which is just as good for most peoples uses. But lets be honest, how many people with a 90/110 actually take them off road....properly off road? Less than 5%, and i think that's generous.

Yes it's a bit of a status symbol for anew generation of yuppie buyers (Or car nuts, like me).....but if buying them means more money to develop Range Rovers, better tech and increasing reliability across the group....is that a bad thing? Now

Probably not far off. The Defender was made for a little over 30 years, at about 20,000 a year on average. Certainly fewer than 750,000 built (not the 2 million that LR trumpeted when they auctioned one for charity - the 2 million of course including all of the Series vehicles too). So 5% is 30,000-40,000 going off road. That's probably fair if you look over the entire world. In the UK, there are as many D1, D2, Classic RR, and P38s around the off road scene as there are Defenders. Sure, the Defender has a following amongst some off roading types, but they are expensive compared to an old D1 or D2 which are basically just comfortable versions of the Defender anyway. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

oh not at all, am on my first RR so i can't really be making decisions for the brand just yet Laughing but i guess with the amount of cars LR produces,

its quite large range(no pun intended), did they really need yet another onroad car? Couldn't they of focused on making this an off road badass that'll make every other car in the desert with it run away.

the things you said at the end yeah i can agree with, more sales, more money, better cars in the future.
