Tyre Question

I was assuming that having bought a 4x4 that it would have all weather/season tyres on it. I've just checked and it has Pirelli P Zero summer tyres on.275/40/22. I was wondering if this is the norm and are these ok for a typical uk winter with the odd snow day? I'm thinking of swapping them for all weather when I need a new set but don't want to buy right away if there's no real need.

They'll be pretty rubbish on snow or icy roads. Probably won't be that good in just-above-freezing temperatures either. 4wd will get you going, of course, but cornering and braking will be "interesting".

Did you buy the vehicle new or secondhand? What specific model is it? Other than the SVR, I thought all RRS came on an all season tyre as standard. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Hi,
As above 👍
There is no right tyre to cover all conditions, everything has a compromise at some point
Run the summers April-October ish and put winters on after that
All Season lean more towards winters and all Weather lean more towards summers
You mention Snowy conditions but as said above it’s more about temperature a wet cold morning at 2 degrees and winter tyres should give you more grip than the summers
Depends what you want from the tyre and where to make the compromise Laughing

And it’s on 22” Confused

Our 2016 dynamic came with 21” Pirelli all weather when New
Thumbs Up Porsche Cayenne 2022
gone Porsche Cayenne 2020
gone Corris Grey HSE Dynamic 2016
gone Ipanema HSE lux 2010
gone Rimini HSE 2005

Hey mate, in the UK at least on quite a few models you can choose a no cost option to specify summer tyres not just on the SVO vehicles from memory, but could be wrong!!

(was offered the choice on a Velar D300 from memory!) Non JLR Vehicle

Thanks for the info guys. Am definitely leaning towards leaving them on till I NEED to swap them. I think we had two days light snow in the last twelve months. I'll just be wary that I'm on the wrong rubber. Priced up some Pirelli Scorpion Verde All Season from Blackcircles at £237 each. Not too bad really. I bought a used approved 2017 RRS AB.

Or alternatively - Rather than nearly a grand for 4 new tyres, if you don't mind changing to 20 inch wheels for the autumn/winter theres plenty of sets of near new L494 alloys with tyres for £350 to £400 for a set of 4 on evilbay. There's a set of 20" OE alloys listed at the mo' with Scorpion Verde All seasons 7mm each tyre for only £400. Looks like the seller has plenty of sets of these. 2010 TDV8 - current - my first RRS, loving it so far......
2005 Cayenne S - handling defied physics and what a sound, so sod the mpg!
1995 Disco TDI- surprisingly reliable, shame about the peeling dash & other trim
Lots of other non 4X4's in between times.........

And I have 2 sets of 21" if 20" were too small.

The ebay tip is good but I'm gonna stick with the 22s as they are. I think we had two days of mild snow last year. Certainly wouldn't be messing around with winter tyres on and off.

Just be careful they’re not knicked. Checkout the seller, and enquire about the vehicle they came off. You might not be bothered they’re ‘hot” in Of themselves, but remember it’s the trade of second hand parts that helps to fuel the terrible state of car crime in the UK.

Did not get much snow where we are either,
But we did get Cold wet roads, frosty mornings and black ice on many days and all of which a Winter gives you more grip than a Summer one

As riverblanche so rightly says - winter tyres aren't just for snow. And if one doesn't want separate summer and winter tyres, there are a number of very good all season tyres around now, especially if tarmac-only use is required. And a number of winter rated all terrain tyres are also now available for those that need off tarmac ability.

There's no excuse for having trouble in winter these days.

I'd be for a policy of requiring a suitable all season tyre during the winter, if not a full winter tyre. I reckon the sight of struggling cars on the gentlest of inclines, traffic tailbacks caused by loss of traction, etc., would be vastly reduced.

Most people, in most cars, aren't going to notice the slightly less sporty nature of the all season tyre over a summer-only tyre. The likes of the Michelin Cross Climate+ would be a great tyre for most people. Those that want to drive like they're in a Fast and Furious film can then buy sporty tyres for the summer.

We do seem to have it arse-about-face in this country. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Good post with video about tyres. Summer tyres are not recommended under 7 deg C
