RRS 3.0 blowing blue smoke...tons of it

Has anybody in the UK had this problem? My 2010 RRS 3.0 started blowing clouds of traffic-obscuring blue (oil) smoke under sharp acceleration shortly after being serviced a couple of months ago.

It would only happen intermittently, ie I'd get it to blow a big cloud of smoke then try it again and nothing would happen.

The local LR dealer replaced the secondary turbo under warranty, which didn't fix the problem. Then last week they replaced the replacement turbo with another (modified) turbo, said that would fix the problem, and it didn't.

So today they're telling me it's because at the second turbo replacement, a one-way valve and a dump valve should have been replaced at the same time, and weren't. So now it's booked in again for its (almost) weekly warranty work as soon as the parts arrive.

They replaced secondary turbos on a dozen 3.0 Discos and RRSs at this dealer alone, so it's not exactly an uncommon problem. Anybody else heard of this issue? Greg Milner

There is a Technical Bulletin titled "LTB00358v5 - Secondary Turbo Oil Leak Excessive Exhaust Smoke" on TOPIx.

Sounds a good candidate and it's on Version 5 so they have had a number of goes at solving the problem so maybe the garage did the work to an earlier version and have since seen a later one.

Since i`m no from the UK, hope that i`m still allowed to answer your question Wink

Had the same thing after the anual service and a repair on the engine (not the turbo).
LR had to remove the plastic turbo pipe to make the repair.
During the reinstal they obviously damaged it, so when i picked it up, it blew the famous tons of blue smoke.

After replacing the cracked turbo pipe (of course not under guaranty, since they just denied damaging it) there was no more smoke.

Hope this helps! Thumbs Up SW

I have exactly the same on a 4.4 full fat range rover which only started after the turbos were warranty replaced. What is it exactly that's causing the blue smoke in your cases? Mine only seems to do it after a long run and only when I slow back down eh in traffic. Only lasts about 10mins or so and then is fine again with no smoke until the next time.

Ielk2001 - best go over to www.fullfatrr.com for your issue as the 4.4 is a totally different engine to the 3.0 RRS motor.
What you describe is well documented over there Thumbs Up
How often do you open the car up above 2500rpm? If you don't then oil is building up in the secondary turbo. There is a cure called the turbo drain mod. Not many places will do it as it's a totally different procedure on the 4.4. It involves a lot more work and drilling into the block/sump for a thread.

Alternatively, give it some beans every time you drive it (when engine is warm). That way it won't accumulate over time.

Does it happen over 2800rpm? Mine was the same and was fixed by the secondary turbo oil drain mod. Cost me £330 at the local indy. L494 3.0L SDV6 Autobiography in Chile Red (Current)

Mine is the same although mine (full fat RR 4.4) only started after both turbos were replaced. Only intermittent too and I'm in UK. Will let you all know once fixed what was wrong but any ideas welcome as garage have already indicated if will be difficult if nothing obvious and not doing it when it goes in. So far I'm unable to reliably replicate the smoke.
