suspension faults caused by ride height sensor (i think...)

So, 2005 RRS S/C has started throwing suspension codes at me. Only happens on the motorway/at motorway speeds and is reasonably inconsistent but frequent.

it will first off show a red suspension error light, say don't go above 30mp/h etc and drop the suspension down to access height (not the bump-stops). More often than not it will change to a yellow light within 10 or so seconds as it's not always possible to immediately pull over on a motorway! Occasionally I just ge ta yellow light and that clears itself after 30 secs or so...

If I pull over, turn the car off, remove the key then restart it, it will start up with no lights and return the suspension to normal height.

When it shows the suspension error light, the 4x4 info seems to think everything is normal. At standard height, no wheels showing error etc. The height rocker switch is no longer lit so cannot change height (it will bong at me if I press the switch to go up or down)

Now here's the interesting bit (to me anyway...) - when driving along with the 4x4 info showing, I can see that the car thinks the right-hand front wheel is going up and down - or is just riding high all the time. But usually the orange square wanders up and down, then sits in the correct place for a bit - remember this is while we are cruising along a flat motorway, so I suspect it's telling lies!. I've not been able to correlate the fault lights with any specific event (I can't drive AND stare at the screen!) but I suspect that it shows a out-of-range height for long enough that the car throws the fault code. So I expect it is that height sensor.

I am also going to investigate doing the wiring harness overlay for that corner, depending if I can get a plug locally in NZ or if I have to order one off eBay. Problem with ebay is the shipping is more than the part itself, which is annoying.

Also very strange is that I borrowed an OBDII bluetooth dongle from a mate the other day. Was driving yesterday and the suspension errors happened. I checked the codes with the app on my phone and the only code showing was P0513 - Incorrect Immobilizer Key!! Ok, so that's not so helpful. Given the key was working and we were driving along at the time...

so, on to my main question: Can the height sensor be "repaired" - e.g. can I remove it, disassemble, clean contacts etc, reassemble and refit? Will I need to get the suspension re-calibrated if I do (I can remove the battery so the car has no knowledge of such surgery...) - or are these a sealed unit and I'll just wreck it trying? Looking at pictures on the internet they look like a sealed unit, but hey - you never know!

Thoughts? Comments? Flames?

Yes, yes, I know - It's a Range Rover. I should just push it out on to the road and put a match in the tank to save everyone the headache. But I kinda like it Embarassed Every home should have one!

I don't believe the sensor's are serviceable. If you do remove it, you will need to calibrate it again. Or rather, you should do so.
(Whether you can get away with not doing so might be an interesting experiment - let us know. Wink Laughing ) 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

cheers. suspected that would be the case.... looking under the arch right now and it looks like it's been replaced once before as it has the grey plastic arms (did the originals have steel or was that the L322 only?)

everything seems ok from the outside so i guess I am going to have to cough up the $$$ to replace it. I assume it's worth doing the wiring overlay at the same time? Also, is there a DIY way to recalibrate the heights or does it have to go in to a dealer? Every home should have one!

it can be calibrated with GAP IID
not cheap though, but very useful for many things if you have a landrover

The arms are plastic. The fronts are specific to each corner (different part number) but the rears are either corner (same part number) if I remember correctly. No idea why. Maybe the wrong sensor was put on it. Question 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

ok, digging up this old thread a bit, but....

Finally got around to ordering a replacement sensor, installed it and.... RH wheel (on 4wd info screen) is underground and throws yellow suspension light permanently. Still goes up and down etc, occasional throws red faults, but they change back to yellow (sometimes) and can be very intermittent. If it's going to throw red errors, it does it early in the drive and does it continuously. Then turn it off, straight back on and she's happy.

The part was bought from lr-trade-parts-uk on eBay (I'm in NZ) and was listed as, and says on the box, it's part number LR020474 for 2005 RRS R/H front. There are no markings on the part itself that mean anything.

I note that the part I removed was 6-wire, and the replacement part is 3-wire and a different shape and orientation when bolted to the bracket. Could a pattern part be different like this or have I been sent the wrong part # in a box with the right part # on it?

Anyone come across this before? Every home should have one!

I think models with active roll bars require 6 pin connectors.

Do you know if these are a separate part #?? Everything I can find says this part number fits my car (which does have active rollbars)... :/ Every home should have one!

Looks like the 3 pin is compatible with the earlier 6 pin. No mention in a early parts list about any difference between them if you have active roll bars or not, only if you have CVD, and not sure that was ever fitted to 05-09 cars. The part number for the L/H/F was RQH500570 that has now changed to LR020473.

If the plug on the car has 6 wires, then I would expect the sensor needs 6 pins.

There may be 6 pins on the original actual sensor, but is there actually 6 wire in the harness plug? as L/R along with various parts suppliers are saying the superseded updated part which is now 3 pin, is updated and completely backwards compatible with the previous 6 pin unit. Perhaps Disco Mikey could enlighten us on the subject as sure he would have replaced them numerous times over the years.

having looked at the wiring diagrams, it seams I am wrong.

The active roll bars are controlled by Accelerometers


Anyway, you need to read the fault codes to help understand the light
