FOB Repair

Hi fellow members.
I thought I might share with you my little experience of repairing my well worn FOBs.
There are two parts to this story.
1. Repairing the torn ragged front buttons on both FOBs
2. Getting the remote buttons to work on my spare.
I have used both of them but the spare had been in the bottom drawer for many a year now.

Repair 1. Damaged Buttons
The cost of replacing the FOBs from the dealer LOL. $$$ Forget that option.
Buying an aftermarket unit. Too much hassle to get them working.
Answer: There are suppliers that supply the button rubber face only for your specific model which are very easy to replace and all for the cost of $A 33.00.
Here is where I procured my two units.

And here is my key with the old crap removed, which by the way takes a little bit of time and care to remove all traces of the old rubber, plus a pic' with the new buttons inserted.

Repair 2. Spare FOB remote not working.
This turned out to be a bit tricky but worked out well in the end.
The car would start with the key but the remote functions were inoperative.
Flat battery? It is a non replaceable item. Only option from the dealers was of course that they will sell you a new FOB. LOL. $$$
We all know that the battery in these things is kept charged by an inductive system that charges it when inserted into the key holder while the ignition is on and/or the engine is running.
So I thought, it's flat because it's been in the drawer for a few years.
Let's just use the key on some trips and charge it up.
Weeks later, still no remote.
OK. it is a spare after all. Let's see if we can get to he battery and replace it.
Attack the back of the fob, what can go wrong?
Not much actually. You can cut away at the back panel with a sharp blade following the natural groove in the plastic.
Don't try to remove the entire area as the bit near the key is impossible to get off. You only need to get at the bottom two thirds say and cut across. The picture shows just how much you need.
It turned out that my battery was OK but it was not making correct contact on the downward face as the FOB began to work when I pushed down on it.
The battery gets held down by two small plastic tabs which obviously had lost their oomph over the years.
I think this may be a common issue with many others who have had this problem.
My fix was to insert a suitably sized o'ring over the battery so that when the back was glued in again it would provide the contact pressure needed.
I cut the o'ring to suit the circumference and the thickness was such that the back cover just stood a little proud when the it was placed back in.
I glued the back in with a little clamping in place to hold the pressure down while the glue set.
Here is the cut out.

Been working reliably for some three months now.
Hope someone gets some help from this story.
Cheers all Smile
