Keith, ZF, the manufacturer of the gearbox recommend a flush every 80,000 to 120,000 kilometers (every 50k to 75k miles) OR 8 years, whichever is sooner.

It's easy enough to do yourself, just search the disco forum.

Or as low as 30k, if you do a lot of towing or off roading Thumbs Up

So if I was still driving as much as I was in my rat year of ownership then that would be me flushing every year 🥴

Once you see the colour of the stuff that comes out, a "regular" change doesn't seem that bad.

After having this done, the biggest change that I can instantly notice, is that the gearbox changes down when braking and when it assumes (correctly) that you are going downhill and would do this is you had a manual.

It used to change down when in S mode, but never in D, now it does it in both.

The carbon clean also resulted in an average 27mpg over a 600 mile trip to and from Cornwall on the weekend. A mixture of stop start slow traffic and legal limit (+) driving, 3 up and luggage.

Well impressed with both the oil change and the carbon clean.

Currently having the body lifted to investigate what we believe is a leaking exhaust manifold.

If you're going to suck it out, you may as well drain it out through undoing the plug. However, that will only get a couple of litres out as a lot of the fluid is in the torque converter.

Using a pressure sprayer, a bit of garden hose and a few jubilee clips it's dead easy to do a full fluid flush yourself through the gearbox fluid cooler just behind the front bumper.

This is what the cooler looks like. The two straight pipes are for the coolant flow, the two right angled pipes are for the gearbox fluid flow. When your engine is running, the pump in your gearbox pumps the fluid from the gearbox into the cooler via the right hand pipe, through the cooler, out of the left hand pipe and back into the torque convertor where it then flows back into the gearbox.

What you need to do is:
1. Remove the hose with the quick connector from the right hand pipe on the cooler
2. Connect your pressure sprayer to the cooler pipe disconnected in step 1
3. Position the hose with the quick connector over the top of a container to catch your old dirty fluid
4. Turn the engine on and pump as much fluid out of the gearbox as possible
5. Pump the same amount back in through the cooler using your pressure sprayer

Repeat steps 4 and 5 until the fluid being pumped out of the box is nice and clean.

A final fluid level check at the end is needed. You will need to run the engine until the fluid hits 40 degrees C, keeping the engine running, undo the filler plug on the side of the gearbox and the fluid should be a small trickle. Drain/top up as necessary.

For me, I ended up using about 20 litres of fluid. Most guys use around 12 litres. I'm just ultra fussy.

Many Disco and RRS owners use Mannol AG55 in the 6 speed box, AG60 for the 8 speed.

Mine is a 6 speed so I purchased 20 litres of AG55 for around £65 delivered from Germany: https://www.motor-oel-guenstig.de/schmiers...uessigkeit

I hope this helps Thumbs Up

Hi, i know it's an oldish thread but is the ATF cooler the same on a TDV6 and in the same place?

Yes, sorry, the above is with reference to the 3.0 TDV6. I didn't realise the OP was talking about the TDV8 at the time.

It's dead easy to access. Just under the front bumper, two screws to drop the protection plate. Kev

The oil cooler on the 2.7 TDV6 is different.

See the Filo thread here: https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic55010.html

The process is exactly the same as above however. Kev

Interesting read, will attempt this when the weather improves.
Can't believe something like this is not included in JLR service schedules, another example of rip-off JLR.
