TDV8 down on power, its a long one

I've had an intermittent misfire for ages, car runs great and then vibrates badly on startup sometimes. I can come and go between traffic lights. However the car never lacked power.

I took the car to a specialist, we shall call these guys Garage A. The said that I needed a new injector at a cost of £550 so I told them to go ahead. Then they called and said I needed another one so again I told them to go ahead. They then called to say the car was fixed.

I went to pick up the car and on startup it was worse than before and white smoke was billowing from the exhausts. The guy fault read the car and said it was giving an error on another injector. I know a garage very well so decided to take it to them as if I was going to need all 8 injectors then at £550 a piece it was too much money.

I took the car to Garage B, they asked if all injectors had been tested and they hadn't. They then had all 8 tested and all 8 failed, even the new 2! I have the paperwork to show that all 8 were underperforming badly.

I had read that often the cause of the rough idle could be the EGR valves so I asked them to fit 2 new ones and they said they would put the car back together and see how it ran. The car now does not misfire at all, it runs very smoothly. But, the car is severely down on power. It feels as though its wading through treacle.

I understand that with all of the injectors underperforming, this could result in reduced performance but it was never like that before. Could the EGR valves have contributed to this somehow?

Garage B are taking it all apart again on Monday and re-checking everything. I have a feeling that the turbos aren't working or something like that. Any ideas?

I'm going to guess that one or both turbos has failed. Lots of white smoke is what mine did when the turbos went. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Sorry I forgot to add that after the white smoke cleared the car drove flawlessly from Garage A to Garage B bar the misfire. Garage A blamed the smoke on injector cleaner. Now the car isn't smoking at all it is running very smooth but low on power.

If all of your 8 injectors are out of spec, I'd definitely get them replaced. Out of spec injectors could cause an imbalance in the engine which could cause catastrophic damage at some point.

Are you on the original turbos? Kev

Italy

I had the same problem, but without loss of power.
Tdv8 with white smoke at starting for about 45 seconds.
Engine running like 7 cylinders for tose 45 seconds.
Garage A, B and C saying I had to change all injectors and LR dealer saying I had to change the all engine.
Finally garage D bypassed with software and fisically blanked EGRs.
From that moment, no more smoke, all 8 cylinders running well and about 25k km with great pleasure.
Hope can be of so e help.

Thanks for the input guys, got the car back yesterday and its running better than ever.

The loss of power was down to the injectors, I've had the following:

8 x injectors
2 x EGR valves (just in case)
1 x inlet manifold
1 water housing (was leaking)

It was far from a cheap job but hopefully all sorted now.

Can you recover the cost of 2 Friday injectors?

I'm hoping I can recover the cost of the previous 2 injectors yes.

I have the injectors to return along with the copies of the test paperwork showing that they failed the benchmarks.

I don't see how they can argue once I email them.

The plot thickens. I drive the car to Portugal every year as I live here for 6 months of the year. The car was driving fine, I got to near Salamanca in Spain so 1200 miles from my house and I filled the car up. As I set off to join the motorway again the car wouldn't accelerate up the hill, then all of a sudden it went. After a few minutes of driving the overheat light came on so I pulled over. Steam was coming from the bonnet area so I opened it and steam went absolutely everywhere!

I have Green Flag European breakdown so I called them and they sent someone out to recover me. Whilst I was waiting and as the engine had cooled down a bit I decided to have a poke around and upon squeezing one of the pipes I heard a puff of air, I inspected the pipe and there was a 1 inch hole in the thick pipe that runs from the radiator to the water housing, Great I thought, not a big job just got to sort the part.

Green Flag were great and sorted a taxi to take us to a 4 star hotel and the car went to a compound as it was a Sunday. The next morning the car was taken to a Land Rover specialist who found the hole in the hose and ordered a new one, He said the part would arrive Tuesday night so the car should be fixed Wednesday morning. Salamanca is luckily a great city so we enjoyed the couple of days we had to look around and do some sightseeing.

Wednesday morning comes and I got the receptionist of the hotel to call the garage to see what time the car would be fixed. Unfortunately she came off the phone and told me that I needed to go to the garage to talk to them as the head gasket had gone and the garage wanted 2000 euros to fix it and it would take 20 days!

I called Green Flag and told them I now wanted a hire car so I could get to Portugal and I didn't want this garage to fix it as this was 400 miles away from where I stayed and meant coming back to collect the car and also a return trip should anything go wrong under warranty.

I arrived to the Algarve last week and the car arrived yesterday, it is currently at a specialist here whilst he does his own diagnosis. He seems to think that the head gasket isn't likely and that it will be something simpler to fix, however I don't share his optimism.

The car drives absolutely fine it just overheats after a few km as its losing water even though the pipe has been replaced. I'll keep you posted as to what happens.
