Suspension pump - which one?

Hello all,

My car is lowering when left but no leaks can be located, I fear the pump is about to go but for now is working fine. I am however just abut to drive to Portugal and stay there for 6 months.

I wish to buy a spare pump and take it with me just in case as parts can be hard to source in Portugal, or indeed if it goes along the way.

I see that there are 2 types, the AMK and the Hitachi, how can I determine which one I need? Do I have to look at the part currently fitted?

If you state the year of your cars manufacture and model it will help those in the know. There is a repair kit for the “compressor” it saves you some money but requires some hands on knowledge and some ability on the spanner’s.


Ok so it’s seems yours is a 2007, so Hitachi

Unless it has previously been changed I think it will be a Hitachi on a 2007 car. If you feel the urge just drop off the plasic cover and have a look at mounting bracket the two are totaly different. Google LTB00420 will bring up tech. bulletin.

Thanks for the input guys. It has been replaced a couple of times but wouldn't it have to be replaced with the same unit? Or are they interchangeable?

The AMK was a replacement for the Hitachi, although you originally needed the complete kit as the mounting bracket and plastic cover was different, also need a software update and a change of relay. But it could have been replaced with like for like if a Hitachi was available. Just to confuse things I believe a aftermarket Dunlop one was also available although I don't think L/R ever fitted that as o.e. from the factory.

If the car is dropping that is not a symptom of a failed compressor - going up slow, not going up or not getting the required reservoir pressure is.

If the car is going down then you have a leak - these can either be external or internal. You say you have checked for leaks which are external leaks - you say there are none so there must be an internal leak. An internal leak is where the internal valves allow air to pass - so can start at a valve block, leak back through the pipes to the central valve block and then back out the exhaust valve in the compressor and out the compressor exhaust so squirting spoapy water around will not pick this up.

You need to first dimantle the relevant valve block and check valve seals and o rings - than back the the central block and do the same.

Are the valve blocks located on each suspension leg? Sounds like a big job. I think in the past my pumps have had to overwork due to this internal leak and that's why they've failed.

There are 3 valve blocks:

One in the rear on the left suspension turret to control the air for each of the rear air springs.
One in the front behind the right arch liner to control the air for each of the front air springs.
One in the centre just in front of the compressor to control the air to the tank and also the other two valve blocks. Kev

Thanks for the reply. My car was originally just dropping on the front left, now it is dropping in all 4 corners. Does that mean that air it somehow getting back through all 3 valve blocks?
