United Kingdom 2012 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Orkney Grey

Most of the time, you'd never need it nor notice you weren't using it. I've driven around off road routes in high range and no programmes selected on Terrain Response and the RRS has just wandered around quite happily. Indeed, in the right conditions, you wonder why you need any of the toys at all!

But there are times when only low range will do. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

I'm told you should use it anyway, needed or not, once a month, to keep it working properly. Is that right? RRS MY17 SDV6 AB

I think they are a horrible. What are they for anyway? To bridge a gap between the Discovery and the RR that isn't there? Who is it aimed at? Sort out the models they do produce first before chucking another (pointless imo) model out there.

In extremis, an RRS will go places a Velar just can't go. The lack of low range will ultimately stop the Velar dead in its tracks.* The RRS also has a decent towing capacity - although the SVR is lower rated than the standard versions, of course. Even so, the RRS SVR can tow stuff the Velar can't.

I admit it's a moot point, however, as almost none of either will ever go off road, but the point stands that the RRS will be better off road. Similarly with towing. But it's nice to know you can if you need to.

As I said, though, the Velar SVR isn't competing with the RRS SVR, it's competing with high performance estate cars. And other people make proper high performance estate cars that are designed to be just that. The Velar is a soft roader and that will always hamper it in that fight.

I enjoyed a brief drive in a Velar off road. Easy stuff and it did it well. I do like the Velar, I think it's a good looking vehicle, very comfortable etc. But it's an AWD estate car on stilts.

*At Les Comes a couple of years ago, we came across a Disco Sport that was spinning his wheels and, eventually, sliced his sidewall clean open. We drove up the same route in our RRSs in low range and didn't even notice the rocky step that had stopped, and then disabled, the DS. Low range made the difference.

I remember that! He was adamant he was going up there until we told him his tyre was flat Rolling Eyes 2003 BMW M5 - 5 Litres of V8 Optimax Slurping Goodness in Carbon Black

I felt a bit sorry for him and a lot sorry for his son who just looked really upset by it all. Good job he wasn't trying it this year - that route was definitely worse this time than when he got stuck! 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

I see that the ultra-desirable 5.0S/C Disco5 SVX has quietly been dropped from the Special builds price lists lists and that a Velar SVautobiography with the 5.0S/C engine is now available (still not enough to make it desirable though). I wonder how many orders were taken for SVX Disco 5ā€™s at >Ā£120,000 a pop were taken? Maybe it should have had the 4.4 SDv8 instead. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

The reason I wouldn't personally take an F-Type SVR is that on 22" wheels with no air suspension in London it is a back breaker - quite literally. Looks nice though.

I was actually considering the Velar SVA as I am one of the rare people to probably prefer a Velar (in Central London) to an RRS as I don't actually off-road - I do a few snow trips a year and that's it and the Velar is more than capable for that and is much nicer to have in and around London.

With that being said after listening to wilf, the reason they've made it a 12 month limited run is because the 5.0SC engine is going to be retired next year and I'm not going to stick my money into an already discontinued model.

So will stick in what I'm in now and see if JLR manage to do anything else to tempt me, the I6 in the HST RRS looks interesting but what with all the problems the diesel Ingeniums are having I'd really like to see some of the I6s in the wild for a bit and even then the model placement annoys me, why not just let you choose all the trims and make HST a new sporty trim? Silly marketing by JLR, some people might want the mild hybrid petrol and the Autobiography trim spec?

Anyway that's my 2p

Review of the Velar SVAD here.:
https://www.topgear.com/car-reviews/land-r...auto/first

I note that the off road pictures were taken at Les Comes in Spain where the Land Rover Party occurs. They're only using one of the easy routes however. Nothing serious but I bet very few will ever do even that. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Just to revive this post, has anyone had a spin in one?

There's a few demo's around the country now, I sat in one the the other day, struggling to see 87k list price but I'd have to take one for a spin to be more firm on that Razz
