2.7TDv6 Am I buying a ticking time bomb

Hi all new to the forum, having put down a deposit on a 2006 113k (mileage) RRS HSE with the 2.7tdv6 engine, I am now having serious doubts.
The more I scan through here and the sister forum, engine failure seems to be a case of when not if.
The belts were changed at 75k on this car, but no mention of oil pump.
If I go ahead with the purchase then new belts, oil and water pump along with a full transmission/diff/transfer oil change, will be done.
My concern is spinnning the shells and or snapping the crank, as there seems to be no preventative measures.
Is this such a wide spread problem? Are 05-06 Range rovers less prone? I don't want to buy a car I'm scared to drive, through being conscious the engine might suddenly go bang.
Any input would be grestly appreciated
Tom

I bought a 2005 RRS TDV6 in 2016 with 109K miles on it and FSH. Like you I was concerned it may go bang and be very expensive to repair but apart from a couple of very minor issues, it ran perfectly all the time I had it. I sold it recently because I retired and had to go down to one car. I do miss the comfort and high driving position but don't miss the 27mpg (my new car will do twice that).

Is it a problem? Yes. Is it likely to fail? No, not really. There are a lot of 2.7 on the road (in both RRS and Disco) and they're not lunching their engines every five minutes. One problem with forums like this is that people often only go on them when they have a problem so the "aargh, help!" traffic is disproportionately high. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

We bought ours at 36k a year and a half ago and today it has passed 57k, its our daily driver. I had no idea about the engine issue until after I purchased the car and I also did give it some thought, but as mentioned above if you think how many are out there......

I may be wrong but isn't the problem "usually" for lower mileage examples; once they've got mileage on its not really a concern. I think I read on disco3 site if you've made it past the 30k mark the chances dramatically drop, but as I said I may be wrong!.

I don't give it a second thought now, being mechanically sympathetic when cold and letting it idle before switching off (even the Mrs does it now). Its the second best car I've been lucky to own in over 30 years of driving.

There is no when it will go it is an if it will go i believe the earlier cars like 05/06 where less likely as the oil pumps were better as to the mileage if they go there is no set mileage they have gone with low miles and also with high mileage it is something to do with the bearing's being starved of oil then rotating on the crank and it also seems that when the belts are changed and oil pump together then sometime's they let go i think the bigger issue is the fact that it is £4/5 for a new block plus everything else i had i disco 3 bought with 113,000 on the clock and sold it with over 140,000 with no issues Thumbs Up

Portugal 2005 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE Cairns Blue

Hi Tom. I'm simply going to paste a posting I did the other day...
Speaking from my own relatively limited experience, I bought a 2005 2.7TDV a year and a half ago. It was an import as I needed a LHD for when I moved to Portugal (March this year). It had around 55k on the clock and 20" wheels. I had it remapped almost straight away.

I've had no problems whatsoever. It had a major service in March which cost me around 4k at an independent 4x4 specialist. It's now done 85k and is serving me extremely well. I too get a little black smoke when putting foot down but I know for sure all hoses and emissions are ok. It's just passed an extremely rigorous Portuguese 'MOT' as part of the matriculation process here and all was well. The best car I have ever owned - and that includes brand new ones.

Good luck. Barrie.
2005 RRS 2.7TDV6 from 2017 -2024. Best car I ever had.

A 12 year old car with almost 120,000miles on it is not ticking time bomb - need to be realistic - it isn't new and will have some issues develop simply because of its age but it has got this far inits life so is no ticking time bomb. 07MY RRS TDV6

I think the only problem is the cost if an engine fails as this can more than the car is worth, plus JLR extended warranty will not cover crank failures.

to add my two penneth, make sure your injectors are working to design intent. In Spain - 2018 F Pace - Frightened away from the Sports due to crank failures
Gone - A couple of RRS, A couple of Disco's. However thinking of another Sport.

Not a ticking time bomb but 100% all will be down to observing service schedules and good maintenance by previous owners. These are expensive car to buy and complex and expensive to maintain result is a big incentive to neglect them until something fails once they get a few years/miles out of warranty. There is no such thing as a cheap to run Land Rover product. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

I completely agree re. the injectors. When my TDV6 spun a main bearing, 3 of my injectors were out of spec when they were sent away to be tested. I'm now considering getting them tested on a periodic basis to help prevent such issues happening in the future. Kev

I've put over 60k on mine since purchased and I've had no engine issues whatsoever. I have had to replace the MAF, EGR (blanked) and a turbo pipe though but the engine has been sound, sitting on 156k or so now. There have been various suspension issues but on such a heavy car and the abuse I give it on/off road then I consider that as consumable stuff.

Bought mine in 2016 with 193000 on it, extensive service history from previous owner and now has 214000, I'm changing it this weekend for a 2010 3.0 but had no engine issues at all.

325,000

just gone through 325,000 miles, 1 owner from new. At each camshaft belt change I get oil and water pump changed and all idlers and tensioners.

Oil pump had a drive shaft issue in around 2009, there was a service bulletin on it if i remember, material change cured the problem
