Noob here with a bit of an issue

Changed my wheels today from 20” running 275/40/20 tyres to 21” running 21/45/21 tyres
Car looks great with arches filled better but when I was driving round later after around 20 miles the car went into restricted performance mode.

I ran through the obvious and only thing I could find is that my oil level monitor wasn’t reading.
I stuck a bit of oil in, left it for a bit and restarted it and the warning had gone, another 20 miles in it was back on.

Left it for about 30 mins, went out and it had gone off again, and finally the oil level monitor was working again.

Any ideas what it could be or if it’s just a nasty coincidence?

A lot of detail missing. For one what model ? For two the wheel size does not make sense. I have been told on my model that the wheel diameter has to be set? M16 SVD8 ,4.4 HSE with a few extras, Sold R50 , Wife SQ5 , BMW R1200GSW.

Hi & welcome to the forum,,as for changing the wheels that won’t make any diffence if it’s a L494 then they fit the 21’s as standard,the oil level,did you leave the car 15 minutes before checking as the oil needs to settle before it will give a reading & by putting more in you could have overfilled it now as it might have been to the full level.

Hi and welcome, pure coincidence it happened after changing wheels, have been running 275/45 x 21" SVR Wheel & Tyres on a facelift RRS1 for well over 3 years and have never had any problems or faults whatsoever plus the speedo now is more accurate than it ever was without changing the size in the CCF files.

There was capacity for the oil as I checked it a few weeks back and it was just under the halfway mark so shouldn’t have overfilled it.

Just need to work out what is causing it, will I have to get it plugged in when it comes on next do you think?

When you say your oil level reading wasn't working how soon after stopping did you try it ? It needs time to settle. I think the advice for an accurate check is run the car to normal operational temperature, then once stopped leave for at least ten mins minimum before checking. Otherwiae a "not available" message is likely. I wish there was a manual stick but there you are.

So the same thing happened yesterday afternoon, had driven around 20 miles at 60-70mph and out of nowhere the red triangle came up and restricted performance mode kicked in.
Same journey today and it was fine?
Seems to reset after about an hour but only happen when the ambient temp is higher.

Any ideas all?

I have also had the oil level failure thing several times in the last two years and suspect that it is something to do with a software update that was carried out at the 2nd service- I get the red warning triangle in the dash with the message “ communication with oil level sensor lost” it doesn’t go into limp home mode though, when safe I pull over, switch off for 10 minutes and restart and can then cover thousands of miles before it comes back again. I also get a total black out of the TFT screen infrequently. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

You'll need to have the codes read before you can get a definitive answer.

As a side note, it's worth checking that you have the same tyres on all 4 wheels. If one or more is different they can have slightly different rolling diameters and cause the car to go into limp mode.
