After failing to sell my Lexus on eBay or here I decided to accept an offer from Sellcar as they beat the others I tried

I had quote from them in Feb for £30800 -

After I clicked link to accept this they replied with a lower offer

Worse still they wanted a deposit for the "free of charge collection" because "Should the vehicle not be as described at the point of collection and we are unable to re-negotiate, a minimum £75 + VAT fee will apply."

So I decided to cancel and try to sell myself but this hasn't been successful so I gave them another chance and it's gone from bad to worse

Friday they quoted me £30380 this time -

I accepted and paid DVLA £80 to remove my private plate ready for collection then they reply......

Now a couple of £100 difference I can accept but £4k

This went from being the best offer on Friday to the worst on Saturday - I used a site called Motorway to compare quotes -

Obviously I cancelled and left them an honest review on Google and Trustpilot which they responded to online with lies which I answered with the evidence above so they reported me and I'm being investigated by Trustpilot

To be honest the others aren't much better; WBAC quote for an old Pug 307 went down by over 50% between an honest online description and the bloke at their place picking it to pieces.

For value, have you had a look at sold listings on eBay? I think it’s probably the only way of gauging what the current market value would be. Sometimes it’s not what you want to hear unfortunately. I looked on eBay at similar Ford Mondeo Estate Titanium X sport to the one I’m trying to sell. They are anywhere between 5 and £8000 on eBay but they’re not selling. I looked on the sold listings and found they were selling at about £4500 so I think I’ll list at £5000 Ono and would accept £4500. 2019 5.0 SC SVA (Current)

That is perverse but if the above is an online valuation wait until you get there.

By the end of my visit I was telling the bloke I'd rather set light to it than sell it to those

I looked on eBay before advertising but it's a rare car so found no information there

I used Tootle to value it before advertising here and eBay - offers were in line with the Motorway quotes - best was £29700 worst was £27700

WBAC offered £19765 in Feb - this for a car that cost £40k 6 months ago in pristine condition and is now £42k new

This and this too: Fake five-star reviews being bought and sold online. I am not suggesting Sellcar also does that but I read this today and found it disturbing.

Reminds me of someone on this very forum a while back. He was “selling” wheel nuts or something very cheaply (£1?) in return for 5 star eBay ratings Obviously a single wheel nut (of questionable quality IIRC) was of no use to anyone but the buyers were entered in some prize draw (which no one from this forum won). The fact that he said he would donate part of the proceeds to some charity didn’t matter because he was still getting 5 star feedback for free. Even if not, IMO the practice was still rotten and dishonest to the core and undermined everything online marketplace and the associated trust is about

These sorts of business suit people that need the sale/money quickly, however they are an added link in the chain of selling and that must be paid for.

Week on week the offers given from any these companies will differ by thousands in some cases.

Gen story - one week my focus Rs was worth 26k with wbac, the next it was 16k. I was checking off the back of a thread on pistonheads and didn’t believe it until I tried it myself

I haven’t ever had to use one of these companies thankfully, there does seem to be an element of praying on the desperate.

Autotrader / eBay / pistonheads and as many pictures as you can muster should do the trick, especially with your weather hopefully on the up.

I think the system is called Capitalism, Muddy you have a car that there are very very few buyers for new let alone used, not even auction houses as they don’t resell quickly. Look at other supposedly eco friendly vehicles - Renault Zoe - new £18000 +£70a month battery rental...... Renault dealers cannot shift year old used ones for live nor money and you can pick up a 12 month 5000 miles for £5000 - how much would the dealer have paid the owner if they have a mark up for prepping and paperwork? You might have more success selling the Outlander PHEV as they are hugely in demand, have rave write-ups and have proven tech. Sorry to sound so negative, but that is reality I’m afraid. Try selling a used diesel car privately these days, no-one wants them, not even Uber drivers. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Muddy, sounds like you'd be better off keeping the car, getting yourself fit again and then enjoying it. You've already taken a huge depreciation hit so why not hold on to it for now? 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
