What is this loom for - and why would it not be connected

I haven't driven my 2010 TDV8 since April this year and have decided to get it mobile again - the battery was dead.

I bought a new battery and pulled the old battery out and found the following, a disconnected major loom.

The second photograph is of the loom connected after I found the connectors separated.

What is this loom for and why was it disconnected.

The disconnection happened either at the factory or when the dealer replaced the battery under warranty about 3-4 years ago. No one else has even touched the battery since the car was new.

There is no way that I could have disconnected the loom by removing the battery.

So what would happen if the glow plugs did not operate? I have never had a problem starting the car even on a cool morning.
