In MY12 SDV6 I average true 30.6mpg over a year. I get 33.4mpg on motorways/dual carriageways at up to the max permitted speed before you get booked. So many 50mph average speed limit sections on M6, M1, M62 and M60 motorways I have to use on regular runs, when normally driving.
Around Town and getting to the shops in the summer season, it drops down to 18.8mpg or even less depending on tailbacks etc. but it never gets past 6th gear, changing into 6th gear using flappers as to slow to auto do it.
Over the readings for a year it alters in the winter, using more fuel, caused by using the FBH, car heater and heated seats, mirrors, screen etc. It shows this does alter consumption although in summer using climate control to keep car at 16c I notice no difference if I don't use it, where others have reported using up to 5mpg extra.
I believe things like carrying to much in car, much not required, the weight of these extras causes the use of more fuel, as does having to much, and more so, to little air in your tyres, good quality tyres will help to, ensure you check your tyre pressures regularly, it really does makes a difference, and helps keep better control of your car etc.
I must admit I always carry a full size spare, but don't remove this although according to Auto Express article it's the easiest way to get a couple of mpg extra. John
