United Kingdom 2005 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE Java Black
Putting Unleaded in a Diesl

Yep, I'm th dumb arse who put unleaded in my diesel RR Sport HSE yesterday and my rangey is now at the dealership.
Has anyone any advice on just how much I'm going to be in for this cost wise? Dealership of course start talking 'replace fuel system, blah, blah blah' and all I'm hearing is ker-ching, ker-ching as the cost ramps up!!
Had quarter of a tank of diesel, topped up with unleaded, drove a mile down a motorway, had the warning about engine problem, pulled over, rangey taken to dealership.
Constructive views welcome please Embarassed

That could be a very expensive mile down the motorway!
Think you could be looking at a very big bill, I was warned by a salesman when I bought my previous Freelander that in this case they would insist on a new fuel system somewhere in the region of £5K and that was for a TD4 Shocked

Best of luck with it, and it might be worth having a read of your insurance to see if you are covered.

Ouch!
Guess I knew that was coming. Read details on cover from insurance co but thy don't seem to mention it either way.
Just been looking around the Internet and really th nossle of petrol pumps should be oval as at the moment it seems you can't put diesel in an unleaded engine because of diameter of th nossle but you can the other way round........ seems bloody simple and yet it's going to cost me severely for my mistake.
Thanks for your reply anyway. Crying or Very sad Evil or Very Mad

I watched one of the motoring programmes a while back and they did a test with diesel in a petrol and vise versa, all they did was empty the tanks and change the filter then refilled! No adverse effects recorded?
Also a friends wife filled up her brand new Rangie with petrol and the AA dealt with it on the spot???????

There have been a few on the 2 forums that have done it but everyone has realised before driving away. As long as the car is not started or even the handbrake electronicly released you get away with a few hundred for tank drain, flush and new fuel etc.
It could be that one mile that could be the costly bit.
Fingers crossed.

Happy Gilmore - sorry but 5k is probably a conservative figure!

Why oh why cann't they make the nozel at fuel pumps for diesel only fit diesel cars - they do it with unleaded.

HG - you're not the first you certainly won't be the last. Please keep the forum posted on what happens, costs etc as your error might help someone else in the future.

Why don't they just put a switch on the pump that you must select before inserting the gun, in big bold letters DIESEL / PETROL.At least if your half a sleep you have to look and read first.

Or a sensor that can detect the fumes and switches pump off it's the wrong fuel. They can put men on the moon!

I remember TopGear had a little voice thingy they tested that said 'warning this car takes diesel' when you opened the fuel cap! They said it would never catch on because whowants to advertise that they drive a diesel! 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

you may get away without changing the whole fuel system etc etc ...but i think that will invalidate your warranty as lr will want to wash their hands of future problems ... i know its a standard procedure for some manufactures..i know of an example on a AA recovery truck he filled up at bp on the A3 near guildford and did,nt make the end of the slip road ....he used the diesel pump but for some reason he had a tank full of water Embarassed that had a full system renewal ££££ i,m afraid

I also saw the programme where they drained the tnks, changed filters and ran it through. It was fine, but, they did use some old cars I think.

I'm sure there is a Land Rover GTR document on this exact subject on the GTR site. As you're a new member you've probably not come across this. It's a pay per view site, you pay £7 for a 24 hr period and you can download all the service bulletins, technical updates, quarantine notices, recalls etc. Has been very usefull for some of us.

Best of luck, let us know how you get on.

You will find that the TDV6 is rather more robust than you think. £55 of unleaded in a td D3 and it ran for over 10miles. Drained the tank and re-filled with diesel. The vehical is still running like it never happened. And no before you ask it wasn't me!!!!

The new FFRR TDV8 has a device to prevent this happening. But as far as im aware there are no plans to fit it to other models yet.

I remember the experiment they did on TV about filling up with the wrong fuels. It was an episode of 5th Gear, I think... That said, a FL-owning colleague of mine had this happen to him (he swears it wasn't him but his brother... but whatever) and his dealer fleeced him £1500 to flush/renew the system. He hadn't even turned the engine on afterwards and got recovered from the petrol station....

Regardless of whether a TV experiments showed this was OK, I expect the answer is different depending on the type of car you have. Good luck and let us know what transpires... Thumbs Up

Coincidentally, someone at JE did exactly the same thing with their TD6 Range Rover.
The ONLY thing that could possible be damaged is the vane fuel pump, which could potentially get scoured by not running in lubricating diesel oil. However, given that you have only driven 1 mile, this is extremely unlikely.
Provided you haven't driven it under full load for an extended period, you are unlikely to have caused any damage whatsoever.
Drain the tank and the fuel pump and refil with diesel. JE also suggested putting some oil in the pump just to make sure that some lubricant gets into the engine early.
Don't let the dealer sting you for a big bill. It should just be a bit of labour for draining the tank and pump.
Don't lose any sleep over it. Wink
