I have wanted a RRS for many years now, the closest I came so far was buying an Ivory RRS interior!!! Lol!!! See my other threads!!

Anyway after some careful buying and selling and an unexpected cash injection from my mum - got to love them! I am in a position to buy a RRS. Now I have two options open to me I can either spend £14k on a TDV6 with around 60k on the clock or I can take a small loan of say £5k and look to spend £19k on an SDV6 with perhaps 70-80k on the clock.

I am trying to understand if the additional spend is worth it - I realise that around 2010 they face lifted the RRS, in actual fact we had one for a weekend a couple of years back for a wedding, it was an '11 plate Black Edition and was so nice! So would I be better of going for a lower mileage TDV6 or taking that little extra cash and getting a faceliftd example with the newer SDV6 engine??

Would really welcome people's thoughts particularly if you have gone from a TDV6 to an SDV6.

No experience but board says the engine on the SDV6 is better. There's probably not much difference in mileage overall in terms of what you get but the extra bells/whistles on the post 2010 car may be worthwhile, as well as the fact that items will be "newer" in the younger car & less likely (possibly) to fail. I guess it also depends on how many miles you do a year and how long you intend to keep it. I do around 8k, so in 5 years 40k miles is not too many. I would love a post 2010 car but I can't justify trading in mine and spending the extra £ to bridge the difference. Going to keep it for another few years yet I reckon or until Mayor of London introduces the LEZ around my house, so I'll go & get an SC

The main guidance on the forum is buy the newest one or the one with the most service history................ You also need to add onto your purchase cost £1200 to £1500 for a very good 3rd party warranty which might also make a difference as to which car to go for. Don't accept any dealer's warranty except if you are getting the Land Rover Approved used warranty that gives 2 years cover at the moment on cars bought off the franchised LR dealership forecourts, most only last 3 months and have so many exclusions that they aren't worth the paper they are written on. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

I went from Facelift MY10 3.0 TDV6 (6spd) to MY13 3.0 SDV6 (8spd) and felt it was a far better engine and gearbox

My brother had 2.7 TDV6 and I didn't like it at all inside or the engine which felt underpowered to me

The SDV6 was available from 2011 and brought 0-60 down from 10.3 to 8.9 sec with around extra 33kw power/80Nm Torque. It also got the electric tailgate, rotary gearshift and paddle shift

I am now confused, a quick search on Auto Trader at 2011 vehicles shows them all advertised as TDV6 not SDV6 and none of them have rotary gear selector?!? Am I doing something wrong??

I may use a touch more then and buy a 2011+ if the changes are that significant, I was obviously confused as I thought the 2010 facelift was the introduction of the SDV6 but by the looks of it the changes were just cosmetic as people still speak of it being a TDV6?

I suspected from reading your post that you were getting confused or being misled

Facelift (MY10) changed from 2.7 to 3.0 TDV6 and got nicer interior - it has a manual split tailgate (glass opens separately) RR lettering is below plate

Brilliant that's confirmed it for me thank you, another quick search with cars up to 4 years old on Auto Trader shows a raft of RRS with the rotary gear selector and boot trim you mention!

In relation to third party warrantys, is there a preferred company on the forum whom people have good experience with? I always worry with warranty companies when you hear the horror stories of them getting out of paying for things, always questioned whether the outlay was worth the hassle, that may have changed though I guess!

I've always stuck with LR warranty as although dearer they can be trusted IMHO and the price of stuff that can go wrong that's what you need - I actually haven't needed to claim off LR but reading posts that's my finding

Can you buy a LR warranty even if you don't buy a car through them or is it their Approved Used only??

Used to be ok as long as it had FLRSH and was within warranty when you applied but you better check

If it is not continuing from an existing LR warranty they will inspect the vehicle and if anything they find is put right LR will then cover the vehicle.

I have read lots of opinions on the forum that Warranty Direct is the best of the rest but you can haggle hard with them. Tell them it's too much and you need to think about it and wait for their call. Now sold 2010 TDV8 Santorini black, lots of extras and best car I ever owned, and there's been a few. I will be back.

It's the SDV6 for me to. The extras you get make it seem in a different league, you get more mpg even though the engine is more powerful because of the 8 speed gearbox against the 6 speed, many have Dynamic drive. Most HSE come with front/rear parking sensors with camera on rear, HD for sat nav against seperate disc player, Flapper paddles for gear change, LED front and rear lights, 20" alloys etc.
Purchasing from a dealer will be more expensive, but you will get extras like 2 year MOT warranty, 2 year genuine LR warranty (one of the best around), half day off road experience course, using similar model as yours. 2 year roadside assistance and many other small things, so that package alone is worth £3-£4K. Worth thinking about, and their cars normally come with full LR service history. Enjoy your search, and ownership, there are plenty out there, so take your time and know what extras etc you want. Don't forget Insurance can be expensive, and Road Tax depending on year/model can average at around £500 PA for a 2012 RRS.  John
