Hi guys
2012 Sdv6, 25k, properly serviced. Last service Jan 2016.


This has happened about 6 times recently, thought it was when it was only when cold but happened today at normal. White smoke fills the road when booting it, say when accelerating onto dual carriageway from about 40-70ish. But if you accelerate after, its clean, nothing. Slowing down, then booting again produces nothing.

Driving about 50 miles a day via mixture of dual carriageway and slow town driving. Usually I don't boot it very often due to traffic etc, but a few times I have noticed it lately.

Am I to be worried? It's not normal I know that.

White smoke might suggest oil. The only times I've seen it was when I had valve stems seals fail on a 309GTi and when the turbos failed on my RRS. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

As it does not happen all the time and not at standstill it's difficult to know what 'kind' of smoke it is - smell etc. I was under the impression that white on diesel was unburnt diesel going through the engine or water in some shape or form. Oil would be more blue.
I'm not ruling anything out at this stage and will try a few more experiments and check fluids when it's light. 2015 RRS AB SDV6, Fuji White, Ivory

Most garages can check your water for any hydrocarbons, if none are there that would rule out cracked head or block.
Is she garaged, it could just be the usual damp and cold weather in Aberdeenshire leaving a lot of condensation in the exhaust system.

I know Frax, we get 9 months of winter and 3 months of crap weather! .....naaaa not that tho.

Like this morning. Was cold damp horrible. Waited till she warmed up and then accelerated hard. Nothing. Not a peep of smoke.

It's under warranty, but just a ball ache taking it, dealing with them etc!

Many thanks! That does seem to likely be the issue! The smoke did seem to be white, but it was at night coming home a few times when i noticed. Always seem to drive in the dark!

So it seems like a couple of hours of work for LR.

I'd better get on to the dealer then. I'm not sure if i would easily tell if this has been done myself from the diagrams?

p.s. hows the 3.0 Remap doing? Also if and when your up around Aberdeen next time i could do with Timed Climate activated too - possibly with remote.

I got this answer from Dealer just now:

I have checked against the VIN and there has been a few service actions claimed against your vehicle by a previous dealer. That being said there is no outstanding campaigns either.
I just need to check with a technician if any of them (previous claims) relate to the fault you are experiencing now.

As a TSB, it's not a "campaign" and will only be dealt with upon a customer complaint

Good news is, if it's not covered under warranty, it's not hugely expensive (in the grand scheme of LR ownership )
