Depreciation

Hi, I tried to post in the for sale section but not enough posts yet, so please move if necessary Smile.

I'm trying to gauge what I should expect to pay for a 2012 / 13 RRS HSE (not the latest shape) with decent spec and under 50k mileage.

Had a look on the for sale ad's on here and interested in a couple but still looking yet.

Looking on LR.co.uk they start at 30k and go all the way to 44k with seems a vast difference. Heres probably a strange point, you but the below car from LR but what would I be able to get for it 2 yrs later and an extra 10,000 miles on the clock.

They seem to depreciate like a falling boulder.

Have a look what a 2010 model with 56000 miles are going for and there's your answer. 24-25 would be my guess. Not ridiculous in my opinion.

When I bought my 60k 2013 Black Edition I was hoping for good depreciation looking at price of new model so when I got 36k for it after 2 years with only 18K miles in mint condition I was gutted Big Cry

Imho people are going for new shape whatever it costs and this has hit value of old shape. I think new shape are losing loads too because they're overpriced to start with but people will pay it due to the hype LR have built

Depreciation should settle down by years 3-4 but you need to watch for big repair bills so get a good warranty Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

Flipping eck Muddywheels, that is a serious drop to lose 40% in 2 years with hardly any mileage.

Did you buy another LR or did you go in to another brand?

If thats the case then I might be better off buying well serviced / maintained high miler for around 15k and running it to the ground.

I guess it also depends on how long you plan to keep the car like you say Muddy. The problem is no one likes to lose money but unfortunately it is part of car ownership. In my experience if you buy used they hold their value very well, as you avoid the worst of depreciation from new. I bought my 2013 Black Edition 8 months old, just under 5k miles, approved used. I part exchanged it last September, 2.5 years old, 19.5k miles and the depreciation was just over 3k per year. The first one was older and bought privately. Lost around 3k per year at part exchange on that one too. However, I may have been an outlier and got very lucky on both occasions Very Happy Current: Volvo XC90 T8 Inscription Pro PHEV with some optionals on top

My previous sport was 6 month old and cost 46K and would of been kept for 5 years but sold after 3 years due to dealer damage for 32K

I previously bought a Disco 2 Metropolis 6 months old when D3 came out and did ok after 3 years but not so lucky this time

I've bought a Disco Sport this time and put money in property now instead of LRs. I plan to keep this 5 years as long as dealer doesn't drop it off a ramp or similar again

First mistake was paying 60k for it new, mine was discounted down to 53k new in April 2013 & any car tends to depreciate from its market discount value not its list price.
I've just been offered 32k in px (33k miles) without any haggling against a new DS or Disco so my depreciation is 21k from 53k which represents a residual of circa 60% after almost 3 years which IMO is pretty good.
My problem is I don't fancy either so will probably keep it another year in the hope that residuals stay reasonable. The F Pace looks good on paper but I can't bring myself to order a car that I can't even see yet let alone test drive.

OTR price was 60K however I did knock it down to 54K by shopping round but still a big drop Confused

Managed to get 2500 discount off the current DS by using ukcarbroker but none of the dealers I tried would give discount. Things may of changed now it's out but I ordered before it was launched. I could of got old 2.2 engine cheaper but that's likely to depreciate quicker than new 2.0 ingenium

Readily available discounts do indeed show that the vehicle start point is too high, hence why depreciation should be measured against the real price and not the list price.

So your depreciation was 18k in 2 years or 33%. Still not too bad when one considers that, as a rule of thumb, even good residuals would reflect 80%; 70% and 60% in years 1,2 & 3 respectively. Real problem is the more you pay the more you will lose, % sometimes sound better than absolutes Cool

I've bought two second hand. In 2010 I bought a 2007 TDV8 & then lost 3k per annum over the next 5 years doing circa 18k miles a year. I bought my 2010 TDV8 last autumn for 26k & expect to lose 3k - 4k per annum over the next 4 years. You have to pay for driving a good car, but I'm definitely not into bigger depreciation which is why I don't buy newer than 3 or 4 years old Neutral
