Replacement Scissor Jack

Back in the summer, I thought the scissor jack included with the emergency spare wheel would be good enough to jack the car up the change the wheels from 21s to 22s. How wrong I was. With the handbrake on, the car chocked and on a hard level surface, it still managed to topple off the jack damaging it but fortunately not the car. It really isn't fit for purpose but I suppose the extra weight of one which is would not be a welcome addition.

It's clear that if you have a puncture, the included jack is an absolute last resort.

Fortunately, LR do not add insult to injury and a replacement is only £66. Mark

Surely it's under warranty, given your car is less than 12 months old?

Indeed it is but the warranty covers only defective manufacture, not poor design and unfitness for purpose... Sad Mark

Sorry £66 or 1p is insult to injury within warranty period for something unfit for purpose Shocked

Yes, you are probably right, the dealer parts guy admitted they are not great but £66 is way below my get-in-a-strop threshold. The message though is clear. If I have a puncture away from base, I'll call out the RAC. Mark

Considering the cost of the SVR a decent jack should be guaranteed Confused Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

Merc Sprinter bottle jacks have been the favoured replacement for the scissor jack ref Discos and RRS1s. Usually plenty floating around on e bay. I bought an unused one 3 yrs ago for £27.99 delivered.

Mark,
Did you put the car in offroad height before jacking? Have used mine on non level side of road wheel replacement and was ok.

I've used mine to remove all 4 to apply wheel protection and it was ok, noticed that it almost lift the whole side of the car by the time you clear one wheel off the ground.

Andrew, yes, I did put the car in off-road height to minimise the distance the jack had to lift the car. I think the foot of the jack moved while I was raising it leading to the jack supporting the car at an angle.

Udash, I'm impressed you used the jack to remove and replace all four wheels. I essentially did that when swapping over from summer to winter tyres. Turning that screw to lift the car is hard work and to do it 4 times... As I say, I now have a trolley jack with the necessary lift, and although I'm doing the same lift, it's much less effort. I think the jack would benefit from a finer pitch lead screw which would reduce the torque required - at the expense of requiring more turns - and a better way of connecting the handle to the end of the lead screw instead of the current hook/eye.

Anyway, the lesson for me is clear, only use it in an emergency when you are on level ground and a hard surface. Mark

One thing I have learned about LR jacks since the first one I had in 2003 is that they work much better and don't slip if you have a small 10"x10"x 8mm thick ply as a foot to place the jack on. The weight of the car sinks into the ply as the jack lifts it. My Defenders Farm Jack came with a plastic/silicone foot moulding that does the same thing. I've never had a jack slip out from under an RRS or FFRR since keeping the small piece of ply in the spare wheel well with the spare wheel. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
