Thanks to member Richard who located it for me on amazon.de, I now have 3 litres of the recommended oil for top-ups between services. I am seeing some oil usage, not much but even so, it's good to have the correct oil readily available.

What's incredible about it - Castrol Edge Professional 0W-20 - is that it of course has a very low viscosity and you can feel it when you shake the bottle and see it move around the transparent seam. It's well out of my experience, normally, I use 0W-40 Mobil 1 and that is thin enough. Note sure why JLR like to use such low viscosity oil, it may be down to reducing pumping losses. It's easier to stir tea than treacle.

The unusual nature of this oil does lead to a couple of problems. First, Castrol only supply it in the UK through JLR dealers who are free to charge what they like. Fortunately, the Germans do not put up with such nonsense and it's freely available. I see Castrol Edge Professional readily on sale in service stations in Germany, though the 0W-20 is special order.

My oil, including expensive DHL shipping, came out much less per litre than at the dealer...

The other issue is making sure that when you take your car in that the LR dealer actually uses the correct oil. When I enquired at one dealer, they offered me oil for diesel engines from a manufacturer I have never heard of and that manufacturer subsequently confirmed to me that none of their oils match the JLR specification...

Mark, you may have to preorder some to collect in Germany next time you go for a short drive to the Porsche factory and you'll have to leave space among the cases of wine on the return trip for 15-20 litres of oil as well to hand over to the dealership when the first service is due. It would be interesting to see what would happen in the event of a claim for engine damage if it was found that the dealership had not used the right spec oil as that appears to be the sort of sharp practise that could very easily happen............... and of course they wouldn't put in the diesel's oil and then charge you the exorbitant cost per litre of the right oil, no dealer's workshop would ever do that would they...............? "Sorry sir but we need to keep your car for an extra couple of days as we cannot get the right oil from Land Rover. Would it be OK with you if we put the nearest equivalent in instead? Oh yes, the dealer will find me much more hands-on than they are probably used to.

One extra complication is the 5 year £799 (IIRC) service pack which it's generally agreed is not good news for dealers and might encourage them to cut corners and use a cheaper oil.

It's not just a problem with LR. My two 911s are being serviced back to back in a couple of weeks and the 20 litres of Mobil 1 they will need cost me nearly £160 less bought from Opie Oils than what the dealer charges. For the dealer, it was a case of, if you want the business, this is how it is.

And the dealers and car makers wonder why people use nonfranchise garages or specialist independents as soon as the warranty runs out! At work when we get deliveries of lube oils (and we are buying 50,000ltrs at a time and on contract from the oil majors) before it can be used samples of each delivery are collected and sent away for analysis to check that it is as per specification. You might have to start appearing at the service bay with some sample pots and send them back to Castrol for analysis. The 0w20 is primarily used to meet fuel economy and emissions targets. There might be minor variations in formulation for the professional grade - but as pointed out - it is mostly marketing to allow higher profit margins. For top off I would just use regular castrol 0w20 or pretty much any equivalent synthetic. If you are adding less than a quart between changes - the fact that the regular oil is newer than the pro stuff in your sump probably more than offsets any difference in detergents or other additives ...
