Battery replacement in key fob for RRS 2008

Hi all,
My spare key doesn't unlock, it will lock the doors after I've driven using the key but when I try to unlock straight away..... Nothing!
I suspect the battery is poorly, but I may be wrong
Is it worth trying to change the battery or just bite the bullet and order a new key from LR £££££££ Shocked Crying or Very sad RRS 2.7 HSE TDV6 2008

I replaced the battery in mine... there are several how to's on google (in a hurry or i'd post a link)

Prise open the existing key, desolder the existing battery and resolder a new one, glue casing back together ! cost me £5 for the battery from ebay Smile

They charge wirelessly when in the car, and like any Nicad battery fail eventually Sad Why?.. Because i can....

This link has a few pictures and other tips that I found helpful when doing mine:
http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic39609.h...ey+battery

Had a bit of a struggle with desoldering the old battery but despite getting it pretty hot and generally rough handling the PCB it still works so must be tougher than it looks.

Good luck Thumbs Up 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

As promised here's the outcome of my key fob battery replacement!

The hardest part was opening the key fob to access the battery! the two halves were well and truly stuck together. I kinda new this might be an issue so I ordered a replacement fob from ebay, but wish I hadn't. The replacement fob was very poor quality and didn't fit together as well as the original so I ended up glueing the original key back together.
Soldering the battery was quite fiddly but if you have a steady hand you should be fine. Had to order the battery from Ebay as no local stockists had them in stock, they could have ordered them in but would of cost more than ordering on ebay. New batt was delivered within a few days.

So total cost, including the useless key fob I ordered ££22.00 a little better that £150 from LR

Thanks for everyones advice on this, much appreiciatted

Well done. Nothing more satisfying than a bit of DIY that works and saves you serious cash. Another great example of how the forum benefits RRS owners. Thumbs Up 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Only gone and done it

Hi guys
Just a big thank you to the forum as ever - saved me a bundle and taught me some new tricks.

Hardest part was opening the fob as has been said many times, the biggest plus was that I knew it could be done and so I didn't give up when it seemed utterly impossible.

Best advice I can now share is about opening the fob...

I used a very sharp craft knife a very blunt dinner knife and a very pointy very sharp multi-tool knife.

Start by flicking the key blade out as if you were going to pop it in the ignition

Next use the craft knife to draw a line in the sealed seam around the whole of the fob, this is to give you an 'in' with the sharp and pointy blade

Carefully and ensuring that the sharp pointed blade goes no further in than about .5cm use it to stab into the seam all along behind where the key sits when closed gradually you should then be able to get the strong dull dinner knife blade in and get some leverage

Now do the same at the top of the fob next to the key blade and work your way down the side of the fob

be very patient, keep prying the halves apart until you get a significant gap and work on it until you can pry the whole thing apart.

I can't add anything to what has already been said about the rest of the operation except putting it back together again where I used super glue all around the join once it was assembled, then I sat there for a few minutes till it set.

I didn't expect it to work, I am not a soldering type of guy (unless it's copper tube) But it did and I am absolutely capped.

Thanks again guys

Nige Bow down
