turbo failour

been driving home from work and the car went into limp mode ,brought the car to an indy and she says the right turbo is down and needs to be replaced ,so its a body off job quoted me £1800 plus vat

the car only goes into limp mode after approx 2 hours of driving .I then park up and after about 15 min the car will start and not show the "limited performance" on the dash and will drive as normal for about twenty mins and die again ( short journeys never a problem)

I know you guys have a welt of experience with these cars and was wondering is this a common symptom with a blown turbo
to be honest i was expecting lots of smoke and no power so to speak.

There should be a counselling service for when issues like this happen, it's ruddy murder. Commiserations! Big Cry

I had similar symptoms along with a whistling sound (and no smoke), although my restricted performance would not disappear after a break. I took it to an independent who could not figure it out so I lost confidence and I took it to a main dealer who replaced the turbo actuator at a cost of less than half what you have been quoted to replace the turbo. The job did not need body off and apparently it is not at all uncommon for this thing to seize, especially on low milage cars (mine failed at 20,000 miles / 3.5 years and I did a lot of infrequent city trips).

FYI, my dealer's receipt said this:
---------
*Turbo/Compressor shut off valve*
Found 3 DTCs in engine module - All relating to pressures
Found turbo actuator seized - requires turbo actuator
Replaced turbo actuator
Part number: LR043939 VALVE-AIR SHUT-OFF & RECIRCULATION
---------

I did wonder what would happen if you got a shiny hammer to the actuator and if that may free it up but my dealer was not willing to go down that route! L405 P400e Autobiography (MY2020)... Silicon Silver / Espresso
