Instructions for changing a cam belt.

Hi All

I remember reading some instructions with photos of a cam belt change on a 2.7 V6. I think it was a link to the Disco 3 forum, but I cannot find it now. Can anyone point me in the right direction to find the write up, which was by one of the forum regulars. I need to do my belts, have all the parts, but would like to save some time by tapping into someone elses wisdom.

Thanks very much
Adam.. Smile

Thank you all, that is exactly the one I was looking for. And thank you Disco Mikey for taking the time to write it all up. I will be tackling the job in the next few days.

Will do. My car is currently up to 103,000 miles so I need to get on with it. Just need to find a clear day to do it!

I have the belts and pulleys and a new viscous fan tool. I put an alternator on a few months ago and had to improvise with a big adjustable to get the viscous fan off. It worked, but I have invested in the proper spanner and holding tool now, much easier. I also have a set of engine locking pins at the ready, so it should be straightforward.

I recently sorted out blocked sunroof drains, which were flooding my carpets. It turns out that a periodic air line blast from the top works wonders!

Well I finally got around to doing the cam belts for my car. Thanks Disco Mikey for the instructions, they were a big help.

Niether belt is difficult to change, but access for the rear belt is a sod. And you have to take a lot of stuff off to do the job. I don`t mind if I never do another!! But that is the car set up for the next 100,000 miles now. Actually, all the belts and pulleys were in great condition when removed, but it is done now in any case.

One thing I did notice is that the O ring seal on the induction elbow in the vee has been leaking some engine oil onto the top hose. This has started to swell up and bleb as a result, so I will have to replace both in the very near future. I once had a top hose burst on my old P38 on the A1, because careless topping up of the engine had spilt oil on the hose, hidden beneath a shield, so it is well to check these things.

Belts can be done in under 2 hours (when you have done as many sets as I have Laughing )

Another 2 hours to replace the oil pump at the same time

well i'll say 6 hours in total then Thumbs Up

disco_mikey, what is the riskiest part of the process, i.e. what stage of the entire process can easily mess the engine up if im not extra cautious? I'm nervous about the crankshaft moving!

If in any doubt, lock the flywheel. Bit of a PITA to get to, but will remove any doubt of anything having moved.

IME, the crank doesn't move, as when tensioning the belt, it takes up any slack in the belt by moving the cam pulleys.

Lock the cams, mark the crank against the oil pump before taking the belt off. Once the new belt is on, everything torqued up, check your marks again. Turn the crankshaft through 2 full rotations, and re-check again.

If everything is tight, and everything lines up, you should be fine Thumbs Up
