TDV8 MAF sensors clean

So having previously cleaned the MAP sensors and seen an apparent improvement in MPG - just had to clean the MAF sensors to see if any further improvement could be made:

But if you want to give it a go you might find the following useful:

Here's what they look like under the bonnet:

After disconnecting the wiring plugs (mark them with tape so you know which is which) loosening both hose clamps on each intake pipe you can pull off (

) the elbows. It's a bit of a struggle and helps if everything is nice and warm but basically you just have to hold the sensor part firmly with one hand and wiggle off the elbow bit by bit. Then using the same technique wiggle the elbow off the lower part of the intake.

At this point I strongly recommend stuffing some clean rags down the lower part of the intakes so you can't accidentally drop anything down them.

Then using a 1/4" drive 8mm socket undo the two bolts holding each MAF sensor to the airbox:

Then pull the MAF sensors away from the airbox - again this is a bit of a struggle owing to the big tight-fitting 'O' ring.

Once you have the sensor off - look down the tube and you will see this:

Mine looked pretty clean but I blasted them with the Halfords Electrical Contact Cleaner (other cleaners are available) from about 3 inches away and left to dry for 20 minutes or so.

Refitting the MAF sensors is easier if you clean and lubricate the 'O' rings with a spot of Autoglym Vinyl and Rubber Cleaner or something similar and fit the 'O' ring to the airbox and then push the MAF sensor back in to it:

Then replace the bolts and the elbows and tighten up the hose clamps and you're done.

Did it make a difference? Well I took it for a spin and it did seem to be very snappy and responsive and tick over with a nice even beat - but then I had just washed the car as well and as we all know - clean cars always go faster (or is that just me?)

Might not have made any difference but at least I know they are clean now.

Doing another 200 mile trip next week so will get to see if the MPG is improved. I'm using the Road Trip Lite iPhone app to keep track of the MPG from now on. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Just exercise more care with the MAF sensors - i wouldnt have thought (given their positions in the air system) they would need cleaning, but they do damage easily and as its about voltage over a wire they are very sensitive things Mike
