Commets/Suggestions Please

Hi to one & all esteemed members,

Am in a dilemma & hope you guys could offer some invaluable insights & recommendation. Since this is a Dedicated RRS club, where better than to seek advice? Very Happy

Am writing from Singapore, am torn between a MY2011 Porsche Cayanne S & a MY 2011 RRSC, 'things would have been much easier if prices are abt the same, it's not sadly. A Cayanne S LIGHTLY specced out would cost Equal to a RRSC fully tricked out! Low end torque for the RRSC are much better + there's luxury in the RRSC but None in the Cayanne S.

Now, have read with horror the insurmountable problems faced with RRSC ownership raning fm SSuspension compressor/ shocks/ radiator:- i.e. "a plastic fitting breaks from the coolant expansion line to the radiator; two inches long at best. NO FIX! Replace the radiator! $600 plus tax, and that's just this week."" Taken from another forum states side. Apart fm what has been stated, Sgp is a relatively HOT & Humid place with occassional temp reading 39-40 degs & the air-con might not cool the car down fast enough if it's parked in the open. Rattle and squeaks in the car fit & finish is also another concern but am sure most of the above stated 'worries'might not affect me since i'll be getting it brand new & comes with a 100,000km or 3 years warranty, am more worried abt the warranty running out after 3 years as parts/labour charges here in Sgp for Continental cars are horrific at best (there's No Land Rover independent specialist).

Now, the Porsche have 5 years or 100,000km warranty. It's nearly bomb proof. Have been blessed with Porsche ownership before & can say that car is built to last & last even when i take it out to Malaysia nearly every weekend for B Road robust driving on roads with pot holes the sizes akin to lunar craters- it hasn't rattle over 3 years of ownership & laden with lots of abuse + the small truth that the Porsche is THE Lowest Maintainence car exotic/sports car i've ever owned. Only down side on the Porsche is that spec-ing it up is damn costly (i mean near or equal spec comparing to the RRSC)

In short, i'll have the Porsche Cayanne S if my brain have the last word on it, however i'll rather have the RRSC in a heartbeat as it's More alluring/evocative to me in all things off road. Oh did i meantion that the RRSC seats head rest is a damn pain in the arse which couldn't be tilted backwards & am wondering if there's any members here having upper shoulders & neck ache over long drives? I've changed 3 set of after market front seats for my GTR simply because the original seats can't offer optimium lower/mid/upper back support all together which resulted in sore/tired back after 200-300km of driving. Hence seats is also very important.

I also considered a Porsche Cayenne when ordering my 2nd RRS......I'm glad I saw sense....

The Porsche is ugly!

P.S. What do you think will happen with a Cayenne vs. RRS poll on a RRS forum? Laughing

That's a tough one... back in 2009 I was looking at a Cayenne S and a BMW X5. I had gotten rid of my 08 RRS HSE (wife's ride) about 6 months prior to this. I ultimately went with the X5 - better overall value and performance is almost identical. I think there are two big strikes against the Cayenne:
1. Cost of comparably equipped Cayenne is staggeringly high compared to anything else (like you mentioned). The fact that nav doesn't come standard and Porsche will nickel and dime me for every feature would ultimately detract from my everyday enjoyment of the car. And, even loaded up, I still felt the interior of the Cayenne S was a little "cheap" feeling - harder plastics, knobs didn't feel sturdy, that kind of tactile stuff.
2. The Cayenne feels smaller when you're inside - actually, I'm fairly certain the interior space is smaller than the RRS - this may or may not be important but I when I was driving the Cayenne I felt like I was in a suped up rav4, not a premium luxury/performance suv. The RRS just "feels" better on the inside.

I loved our RRS - I still find myself turning my head when I see one on the road. To me it's a beautiful, iconic shape - like nothing else out there (especially as more and more companies are/need to pursue maximizing aerodynamics, fuel efficiency, etc - and the resulting streamlining/rounding out of suvs... yes, I'm sure Land Rover/Range Rover will head this way eventually, but for now they still continue to stand apart from the crowd).

Personally I'm already planning my next car after the X5 and right now the RRS is my top pick - I want to be back in the fold!

Appreciate all of you Gentlemen comments, Yes, you are absolutely right Mr. Johnny on your observation but am hopping for more horror stories fm existing owners to slap the living daylights out of me so that i'll be convinced enough as my 2nd hand car trades friends/ wife & extended family have been advicing me against getting the RRSC as residuals are horrendous at best (50% off at 2 years over MSRP MIN & have to nearly beg prospective buyers to get it off my hands) when comparing to a Cayanne (25-30% off MSRP).

Seperately, i'll hate to be very close & personal with my main agent service staffs to the point of even knowing what they do for relaxation & so forth (believe you get my drift Smile ) then there's this small inconvenient truth that i do not have oil fields nor huge chuncks of lands that are heavily forested so that i could cut trees to subsidised or enrich my agent with super regular visits. Big Cry

Exactly my same sentiments! Thumbs Up

Actually this is where i beg to differ, the 2011 Cayanne IS bigger/more spacious inside-especially the rear & the material are pretty sturdy/rock solid, then again the 2011 RRSC isn't exactly shabby but am wondering how long it'll last plus buying british is a very emotional experience. It's every inch desirable & may i say it's perveresly 'sexy' somewhat? But am kinda worried if something f*%#@ up when am far fm home (singapore) as i intend to drive to Malaysia & Thailand for holidays which it'll be a disaster if something mucks up mid way.

This is my second RRS and I have never had a problem with either.

Residuals are good as well, my last one was £50K new and I sold it for just under 30K after 3 years and 60,000 miles which I think is great.

Phew Surprised Glad to know that there are RRS out there which don't leave their owner cursing & swearing Smile

As for residuals, am afraid that Sgp isn't as lucky as GB Big Cry

Ah - yes, I'm sure you're right - I haven't driven the 2011/newest Cayenne, just a 2009. I've looked at the 2011 interior but haven't sat inside - I'm glad to hear that they increased interior space. I remember when I test drove the Cayenne: I get in the front seat, sales guy climbs in the rear. My wife was with me and as she enters the front passenger seat, she whacks her head on the interior door pillar - very hard! I actually thought she might have given herself a concussion... to this day she swears she'll never get into another Cayenne! The poor salesman knew the deal was blown...

As for the British factor - you're absolutely right... there's just something special about British cars (I've had Jags and RRs, still trying for the Aston or a Bentley... someday). Although they don't always get the credit the Brits do turn out world-renowed design, especially with autos, IMO. I do believe you'll get that "special" factor with the RRS, while the Porsche is a Teutonic machine (mechanically perfect, but perhaps lacking in soul).

Also, I never once had a problem with the RRS in two years of ownership (actually that's not quite true - my wife ran out of gas once, but she was pushing the limit on the gas tank, then took a sharp turn and I think sloshed what little remaining gas was in the tank). Maybe one other thing to consider: what off road capability do you think you'll need? Do you anticipate driving in a lot of water or mud? If so I'd go with the RRS - I think the Cayenne will struggle quite a bit more than the RRS if pushed hard off-road... then again, if you get the RRSC, those sport tires aren't going to help matters...

Honestly? I prefer the RRS over Cayanne anytime of the day but it's the realiblity that am very concern as both cars cost SGD$400 Grand a pop! Not to mention that servicing cost & parts pricing is verging daylight Robbery as it's unbelievably expensive. The front suspension arm knocking sound is a good example as so many Brits here are facing problems as their respective main dealers are also in the dark as to what causes it then compare to the Sgp main agent who just took over the dealership barely 1 year ago- not very confidence infusing right?

Was trawling all the RR forums fm the 26th May, 27th Fri was reading everything that my brain can process into the wee hours of the morning of 28th May (530am). Can safely say that this RRSC is the only vehicle that I've been diligently researching for I hate to flush good hard earn money down the toilet & heartache/ headache as a norm for RRSC ownership.

Am actually blessed with the opportunity to have owned quite a few cars (it's more than what's listed) but those that have been listed have been modded to the max by me & boy, there's problem everywhere & mine field- now it's been modded fm stock hence I can accept problems but not when it's stock.

Imagine driving in some deserted stretch of roads & u're car breaks down on you, this is South East Asia Gentlemen- one can be easily robbed/ wife raped & so forth hence a car that is more of less bomb proof is essential or make that paramount. Read fm another forum that a guy chose to go the Beemer route since he can't afford to have his 2 young daughter stranded in deep snow when reliability are at best for the RR.

Porsche are just as bad! My friend would tell you some stories of her (2) 911's and Cayenne! Never again was her comment

RRS issues are not really that much of a problem.

As for the price - Range Rovers are expensive...end of - eyes wide open thats the cost afford and enjoy or dont buy Exclamation and buy something cheaper...maybe a discovery? or a BMW or Porsche. Mike

RRS all the way!

The revised Porsche is now a better looking car (than the outgoing) but is still a dogs dinner regurgitated, compared to the RRS, a box with style Wink , there really is no competition. As for what others say, yes some may be true, some may be exaggerated somewhat and some will be pure lies from people that have aspirations to own a luxury motor but expect it to be handed to them via benefits.

In 3 years time the RRS will still look Cool whereas the Porsche like all Germanic designs will date terribly and at the end of the day comes from the VW stable of platforms with a Porsche badge stuck on it........

....I know which one I would have, go buy the RRS! Very Happy L322 Big Daddy SUPERCHARGED 5.0 Autobiography - Here & Now!

5 series for the miles Smile

RRS S/C factory built HST - Gone

45 others have been and gone!
