I have a August 2010 RRS TDV8 with 2500km on the clock. From brand new the engine was great, very smooth and hardly any diesel engine noise unless from a cold start. I got back from an overseas trip about 3 weeks ago and my wife picked me up from the airport. As soon as the engine started at the airport I said what has happed with the car, it made lots of diesel engine noise and was not as smooth as it had been, sounding very thrashy when reved. A trip to the dealer and I got the reponse "there is no problem with your car sir" it's a diesel. The fact that the car was not like that 2 weeks ago was irrelevant to them.

With the acoustic windsecreen and laminated side glass the 2010 model sounds quite different from an 2009 or earlier model (i.e. more refined with less diesel noise) and they do not have any 2010 TDV8's to compare it with.

The car is very obviously a diesel now making a "diesel clatter/lifter noise" at all revs even when fully warmed up and is not as smooth and powerful as it was previously.

We have gone through a 2nd tank of fuel since then so it is unlikely to be bad fuel.

Any ideas what the problem might be. The dealer does not want to know about the problem and I dont want to keep driving a car that sounds like an old 80 series Cruiser.

Have you checked the intercooler pipes, air filter etc?
On our 2007 TDV8 the intercooler pipe burst and it immediately started sounding like a tractor. Ok there was a loss of power too

When you was away did your wife accidently put some Petrol in the tank.  2006 S/C Bonatti Grey, OEM Steps, LAND ROVFR Mud Flaps, Soft/Smooth steering wheel, 2010/11 HST Wheels.

There is no resolution.

Had the chief Landrover Australia technician look at it - It Sounds Normal to Me Sir its a diesel.

What can you do.

It went in for its first oil change last week (3700 km), $550 later bit steep but hey its a Range Rover.

Only real fault to date other than the diesel noise is the auto up on the drivers window stops autoing up and needs resetting.

Would I buy another one. Yes Yes Yes.

A bit of volume gets rid of the diesel noise and you can still hear the bad arse rumble from the exhaust.

They really got the tuned exhaust right on the 2010 TDV8, gives the car a bid of an animal feeling about it.

I wonder whether the injectors are "wearing in" and just becoming noisier. I assume that your fuel consumption has not changed despite the increase in the noise levels from the engine.

I would recommend that you try adding some Flashlube diesel additive to the tank when you are filling up next time. You can buy this product from Repco. I personally believe that the ultra low sulphur diesel in Australia doesn't have enough lubricity for the injectors, and that's why they become noisy. 1999 Discovery II V8 auto

Tried your suggestion of Flashlube Diesel Additive and the engine does sound a lot less "diesely" i.e less ignition rattle noise. The difference was noticable straight away. The additive is cheap so you win on both counts.
