Roof bars - Protrack Whisperbars

Looking at buying a roof box for our RRS, and so need to get roof bars sorted also.

I have seen the OEM RRS rails and bars on here and other sites, however the place selling the box we are looking at also has Protrack bars and fitting kit for the RRS - from what I see the fitting kit uses the same fixing points as the OEM kit.

http://www.roofbox.co.uk/fitting/K436-S9-01.pdf

When I look at my roof, I can see 3 small plastic caps on the roof on the black plastic trims - the OEM fitting guides show that these need to be drilled; if I already have these caps, has the drilling already been done? I have a 56 plate SC

Don't want to make a purchase and find I have a days work to get the box onto the roof...

Thanks
Mike

No drilling needed. Just remove the roof running strip, then the plugs on the running strip and then the plugs that fit into the roof of the RRS (These are very difficult to remove but will eventually come out) 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

Thanks for the reply.

I presume the roof bars are then a permanent fixture?

I've just bought some of these bars for my 60 plate RRS. If the caps are there then you should already have the threaded inserts.
I've got the through bars so I can get some bikes on as well as the roof box , and have found them a lot quieter than the Thule Aero bars I used to have on my Jeep. The adjustment of the through bars takes a little time when you first fit them as you have to adjust the width to position the feet correctly, but once that is done they lock in place and are a doddle to take on and off.
You my also want to check with Roofbox that they have the correct footpads in stock. When I tried to order them in Feb they were awaiting stock, but then the 'quake hit new Zealand (where Prorack are based) so they were waiting for the factory to get up and running again before they could get stock. I needed them for a holiday last week so got them from Halfords, which were more expensive but at least they were in stock!

No - roof bars are easily removed. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

edvarski - thanks for the tip. Likely only going to have a box and 1 bike on, but the idea of through bars "just in case" may be a good idea.

Very Annoyed - so I can just remove the rack and refit the (hopefully not broken) caps in to the rails?

No - the bars are removable - the rails are not so easy to do. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

but the protrack system does not include rails - the feet locate into the same holes as where the OEM rails would go - which would mean when I remove the bars the feet come out also - so would then have holes in the roof trims?

Sorry I'm only referring to the LR ones. The problem with any 3rd party ones is I would guess that you would have to remove the whole roof running strip to fit bars - this will look messy. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

Im interested in this as we have been looking to fit our roof tent on the sport for a quick europe tour.

I was under the impression you had to drill to fit...so am i correct if you have the caps along the black roof strip there is no drilling?

Can you also fit extra bars to the rails...the roof tent likes 3 or 4 bars...

Is there anything else when fitting them (eg remove headlining or cut up the car?) Mike

LR Original kit has two fitments for the roof rack fitment.

1 Roof Rails
2 Feet that sit in the holes

With the rails you can also use the roof bars very easy to fit/takeoff when needed. The roof rails bolt into the hidden holes but the sloping ends are fixed using adeshive so not eaisly removable. With Rails taking full expo rack on off much easier less damaging and has the advantage of the roof bars. You can also adjust the distance of the roof bars to the lenght of the roof rails allowing for different loads

With option 2 the plastic feet, they either have to stay in place when taking the roof rack off, (looks really silly) or you can remove them but you will need to replace the rubber strips every time to cover up the roof holes.

I have had both systems and the rails offer more flexibilty and choice of mounting options. Some feel they spoil the look but I quite like them in place.

Most boxes will either fit or have adaptors that will fit the standard LR roof bars

When I fitted my bars I just prised off the plastic caps and underneath there is a threaded hole. The the prorack roof bar mountings come with a grubscrew that you screw into the holes in the roof, and then the rest of the rack attaches to this. It can be easily removed too when you don't want the rack on, and the bungs inserted back in (as long as you haven't trashed them when you pull them out Wink)

I would post some photo's, but my car is in the body shop for a couple of days as one of the neighbours kindly let their car run into my front bumper when they forgot to put the handbrake on properly.

There is another fitting guide on the Roofbox website which shows it in a bit more detail though:

Well, after thinking long and hard about it, the protrak kit does seem straight forward enough to fit, and as said, if you keep the plastic caps in good condition, you can remove the kit when not being used. From looking at the caps on our car and trying to remove, I can see this being a nightmare as mine did not want to move when I tried.

Took the easy (cop out) option and went with the Thule aero bars, Thule box and Thule bike carrier. It all arrives today in time to have a play about with it all before heading off for the easter weekends.

I have the Thule aerobars for my car and the noise is terrible over 60mph. Not due to the bars IMHO as previously I have had no issue with noise on BMW 5 & MB e-class estates. Rather the noise is generated by the Thule footpacks which are huge monstrosities and because they sit on the edge of the roof are right in the airflow

dammit Censored

Well, will see how it goes on our trip from London to Aberdeen at the end of the month. If it is terrible, will get them on ebay and go with the protrak bars and leave them permanently fitted.
