Diagnostic Fee - To Charge or not to Charge?

Just a quick question, and by no means slating any dealer - but for eg if you took your car to a dealer to find out what the problem is with your car, and they came back and said it was X Y and Z - would you expect to pay a diagnostic fee? Coupled with the fact that I am getting the work done from the same dealer? It's not a small amount, nearly £250 (which equates to 2 hours labour)

Any thoughts would be much appreciated...

If a dealer is carrying out the work then then in most instances the diagnostic time is absorbed, especially if the customer is a regular customer or bought the car from the dealership.

If however an issue is diagnosed by a dealer and then the customer chooses to have the work carried out by another dealer then the diagnostic time should be charged.

Another situation where it may be chargeable is if a dealer has not been made aware of some key information which leads them to look in the wrong area for a long period of time. I.e. the customer says that the vehicle has a running fault, but forgets to mention that they put £10 of petrol in their diesel vehicle. etc etc.

Took the wife's golf into Lookers VW today and they wanted £50 to diagnose if a £15 quid coolant sensor was faulty or not Mad
Needless to say i didn't pay it and i will replace the sensor myself as i am 99.9% sure it's faulty as it's a common fault on golf's (quick check on google).

My thought was exactly what James said. If work carried out by the dealer after the diagnostics then no it shouldn't be charged.

Suzuki Sailsbury were going to charge £85 for diagnostic.

Also told the wife that the cat would of failed as well as had been running with fault light on,

common fault front lambo sensor, just ordered part and fitted it, no problem since, no problem with cat.

To plug in a fault reader and download the codes is a 5-10 minute job at most Exclamation

Well the said dealer wanted to charge me to diagnose it and also do the work. Don't know if they will not charge me, as the service advisor said it was free of charge, whereas service manager said he should not have said that, let's see what they come back with on Monday.....they are going to do the work, to fix the faulty radio - needs a new head unit, best part of £600!!

Just an update on the problem with my radio and the diagnostic fee etc..

I was going to book the RRS in to have the new Head Unit fitted this week, to cure the faulty radio and aux input - £600 or so. After not having driven the Range since Christmas Eve, got in it yesterday as was buying a new TV, so needed the bigger car - tried the radio - and it worked - spooky thing is the song by Al Jarreux - Morning Mr Radio was on R2 (not that I play Radio 2 - but it's the first radio station to come up on the FM dial!)

Sooo...raido is now ok, and if I had the work done, the diagnostic fee would have been waived - so now the radio is ok, what do I do about the diagnostic fee? Nobody has asked me for it, but I kinda feel a little bad about it, so any thoughts??

Thanks Thumbs Up

Good point - friend said the same thing, as problems rarely cure themselves - so will wait and see what happens. Going to sell the car in the coming weeks/months (yet to decide when) so lets hope it holds out..

That's what I was thinking. You could probably even swap the buttons from your existing one.

Happy New Year to you too Thumbs Up
