2010 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE Galway Green

I think given the mixed opinion about getting the cars muddy it might be worth keeping that for a separate weekend. For those interested in this I'm sure we can join up with one of the disco meets. WINNER - 2009 ‘Just Doing What It’s Designed To Do’ Award

United Kingdom 2010 Range Rover Sport Supercharged Santorini Black

Dear all,
I would be interested in the "green run" part sometime in July (if it's going to take place in mid/end July), nothing muddy though, because I will have 20" wheels or possibly 22". However, since I have no off road experience yet, I would also like to see how its done (not with my car though... Smile ). Vadim A.

I could make end of July or beginning of August. Since i still don't have another RRS, (and the Aston may struggle offroad), I'll bring the Defender 110, which is offroad prep'ed and has a winch. The only problem is keeping up with RRSs onroad - she doesn't go fast.
James, I'd be interested in the set up you have with the Netbook, GPS and MemoryMap. Can you let me have details and I may try & get myself kitted up?

Ant,

I've got an Acer Aspire One Netbook running Windows 7 (£279 John Lewis), a Bluetooth USB Dongle (£1.50 from Ebay), a CoPilot Bluetooth GPS Reciever (£35 Ebay), and a Netbook windscreen mount bracket (£20 Ebay), a USB to Mini-USB lead to charge Reciever (£5 PC World) and a 12v Charge Lead for the Netbook (£15ish from PC Shop), plus the all important MM software which I have down to 1:25000 which is ideal for ensuring that you are exactly where you should be whilst green laning.

All pretty easy to set up, however the Netbook is pretty full with the maps I have, therefore it's now only useful for MM or email/web browsing. Only issue I had was setting up the Bluetooth GPS as you need to establish the COM Port and then set the Netbook up accordingly, and also set up in MM so that it recieves the location info.

It's like a very very very detailed sat nav using OS maps however it obviously doesn't have the capability to direct you. It will leave a trace line to show where you've been which you can then email to other MM users. You can also mark points of interest to assist with navigating.

It it so much better than using a paper map as you can see exactly where you are (within 2-3m I'd say), however you still need to mark restricted byways. 12v lead is also a must-have as the Netbook would be flat within an hour without it due to the software and GPS running.

Jeremy at LPR also has this setup however he's just bought a specific MM system which is like a large TomTom which I believe was roughly £500. Also Garmin do a hand-held MM equipped GPS system for £250 which may be more practical if you also want to use it for walking. The Netbook setup is probably the best all round set up for vehicle use.

Hope this helps?

James Thumbs Up

It's just an interface for your MM software so you need to have MM for PC first. If anyone is using it then I'd be interested to hear what they think.

Had an email from Tim this morning James and he says he'll be home for July and is definately up for the meet at the end of July. Dont know if any of the mods can put up a vote for July for him or not. Current, M135i in Estoril Blue with more extras than the cast of Ben Hur.

2013 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Stornoway Grey

Hi guys, just passing through Felixstowe. As 4wd says count me in. James I have the iPhone MM app and it's just thes same as using it on a laptop except you don't have the 3d capablity. Drawback is the tiny view on the screen and the power drain - you need to have the iPhone on a car charger line all the time. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
2018 Melting Silver Mini Countryman PHEV - soon to be replaced
2015MY Corris Grey SDv6 HSE Dynamic, the best car I have ever owned, totally reliable only a cou0le of rattles in 3 years, now no longer in my care
Also in my garage is a 1996 TDi300 Defender 90 County HT made into a fake CSW

Welcome back Tim!!

Sounds like iPhone MM is the way forward as my Netbook needs to be powered also due to the drain. I don't use 3D but what is useful is the saved trace point it leaves where you've been and I suppose a bigger screen whilst you are rocking around off the Tarmac is helpful. For the sake of £20 (plus MM) it's probably worth trying first.

Tim, can you give me a demo next time you're about? Are you back for the 40th Anni meet on Sat?

James Thumbs Up
