Yes - but wise to check that the BOATSs (routes) you want to use are open. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten
2009 Alaska TDV8 - Gone and much missed.

BigDJ,

There are many ancient rights of way (ROW) that are open to vehicles on the Plain (same rights as a normal road), however the military use the plain for training etc, therefore you quite often find large parts 'out of bounds' as they may get into trouble if they blow your RRS up!! You also find that the local ROW Officers will close certain routes for different reasons, mostly due to damage/weather issues that could damage that section. Unfortunately, some people will make a point of trying to get stuck, straying off the official track and generally ruining it for the more sensible amongst us. As VA says, you need to make sure that the route you are driving is legal, otherwise you can end up in trouble.

I have a Defender that I go 'green laning' in, and you will find green lanes dotted all over the country. Last weekend I was in Wales with RRSBoy in his TDV8 which was good fun. We have Netbooks running GPS with software called MemoryMap. This gives you 1:25,000 scale Ordinance Survey maps which show where you can go, and also where you actually are. This is all well and good, however you have to check with the local council/ROW Officers that the route you plan to take is open.

This is 1:50,000 scale. The pink crosses are generally the tracks that you are entitled to drive. Note the danger area! This is just a very small part of the plain.

My suggestion would be to find out if anyone else on the forum knows of any non-damaging routes for RRS's as quite often they can be a little overgrown (paintwork!), rutted (Get stuck/belly out) and stony (wheel and bumper damage). Unfortunatly in the Defender I boldly go wherever I legally can, and if it gets stuck or damaged then it's not a drama. If any of the members are used to going out in their RRS then they may know where to go where the damage can be limited.

If you want, let me know when you're next passing the dealership and I'll bring my Netbook in to show you. I am quite new to this, so I'm sure that someone will be along to give a bit more detail.

James Thumbs Up
