It's a beautiful sunny day.....but....

...why do the auto lights always come on when the sun is shining nice and bright as it is today?? Does anyone else get this?

I have noticed that some people have their headlights on whilst driving in sunny weather. I actually asked a policman that I know and he said that some organisations reccomend that you have your headlights on if you are driving away from direct sunlight so that those coming the other way (into the sun) can see you better.

Not sure how much truth there is in this or if the auto-headlights compensate. Question

Since having 3 740 Volvo estates in a row back in the 80's I have always driven with headlights on all the time, can't see why you wouldn't,how many crashes are caused because the other driver didn't see you, especially if you drive a "road" coloured car such as grey or silver. MY2011 HSE Santorini/Ivory/Piano Black/Privacy Glass/TV .Sadly gone.

If you switch off the lights at the switch and leave them off for a couple of minutes they will reset when you put then back to auto. Also have you checked there isn't dirt/dust on the sensor? With all the salt that has been put onthe roads of late the dust gets drawn into the ventilation system and blown all over the interior.

BTW Isn't from 2010 that all new cars will have to have daylight running lights under new EU regs anyway? 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Completely agree Chirs.

It does no harm to have them on all the time and only increases your visibility!

It should be law!

Old Swiss saying...

"Motor on, lights on."

It used to be plastered on the back of all the police cars but obviously in German! Thumbs Up

i used to drive with side lights on, but having the auto light now i drive with them off or on depending on what the car wants to do Rolling Eyes

The Vauxhall Insignia I had last week had a quite a good system where it would put the full high beams on automatically when on dark roads and no cars coming towards you, but was a little slow in dipping when something appeared.

But to turn this function off completley you have to, switch the car from "Auto" past "side lights" to "normal lights"

when you turn the knob and go past side lights which turns your headlights off and back on again about 1 second later leaving you in pitch darkness of a country lane until the xenon booted back up

That side was very bad & dangerous, especially when you didn't expect it Shocked

I actually had the Daylight running lights option turned on by the dealer, I agree with the Swiss, French or whoever.... well I really learnt from the Norwegians, it sure does make improvements to vehicle awareness.... something good driving all 8 lanes of I10 dodging speeding ford trucks Rolling with laughter Brit across the Pond Wink
