a quick google highlights the problem could be with nView (nVidia software) - does your Dell run nview?

After hours of trying to repair it from advice on several forums none of which seemed to work I ended up having to reformat and using the rescue disc to start all over again.

I think the problem can be caused by a wide variety of issues.
