Building Society Charges

A Tale of woe

Mrs Jonty is an Avon lady. One of her customers gave her a cheque for £24 as payment for the last order which Mrs Jonty subsequently lodged with the building society...so far so good.

Unfortunately for reasons as yet unknown the cheque bounced. No big deal you'd think EXCEPT Mrs Jonty got hit with £26 of charges Shocked Shocked Shocked

They then advised that if Mrs Jonty had any reason to doubt that a cheque would be honored then only to accept Cash. Could be a bit of a problem as everyone she sells to she's know for years. Evil or Very Mad

Apparrently, so the staff said, this is a new directive from HQ. It's certainly not something they've ever done before.

Not sure what the rest of you would do but I've told her to close the account unless they re-instate the £26.

Shame as Mrs Jonty has been a customer for 35+ years at this particular building soc and that's the reward. Big Cry Current: I can't say...Oh the Shame!

I would contact the national newspapers - this is exactly the kind of story they would like to get their teeth into especially the Daily Mail. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten
2009 Alaska TDV8 - Gone and much missed.

A lot of banks are starting to phase out the use of cheques, as the processing costs are becoming untenable. It may be that this building society is ramping their cheque fees up as a sweetener to stop customers accepting/writing them.
