After the hilarity of the new TV my son has asked me if he can build his own website; he is 9 and has a techno numpty for a father.

So my questions are; is it possible? Where can he find out how to do it? Are there any dangers to it (to my computer rather than safety etc) Oh and he wants a game on it

it can be fairly straight forward depending on what you want to do - not a very helpful statement I know.

Do you have a idea of what you want? It may be a good idea to get him a 'myspace' account - with myspace you can play around with how the whole page looks and practice html and the like - there are loads of 'how-to' guides on youtube, plus loads of simple addons (i.e. games) etc that you can add fairly easily

Well, it all depends on how computer savvy your 9-yr old is.

I've not done much in this arena as my kids aren't yet old enough to do anything short of YET another picture of Iggle Piggle in Paint But how about one of the self-contained site building tools like at freewebs.com or something?

There's also something called www.easysitebuilder.net which has a banner graphic of a baby sitting in front of his laptop so it must be easy

I'm not so sure about the social network sites unless you can password protect the site to stop others seeing it as he is only 9 (in a few days) although he is internet aware, most of his internet usage unsupervised has been on the Lego kids website (one for you to look at S)

Wasn't too keen on paying for a site either not until I see the full cost of the other venture

He is quite techy and creates PP presentations with animations as well as using publisher word excel etc I suppose what I'm looking for for him is a project to harness his time into something productive. Can you create websites offline for instance? Porsche Cayenne S Diesel 66 Plate

If he doesn't want anything too serious Freewebs is fine and won't cost you a single penny.

Pelmya - any 'website' will be available online - be it a social networking site or not - or do you want it offline?

Had a bad experience with Friends Reunited (ended up been stalked by an Ex and i'm not joking) so I sort of have it in for any site where there is contact.

Not with the freewebs builder you can't, as the builder is online itself.

Simple, HTML-only pages, can be put together in MS Word and saved locally so that the collection of pages can act as an offline "site" - which might help Pelyma Jr to grasp the notion of it all....

In Word you mean?

You've got a "save as webpage" option off of the File menu. It's a simple way to get content out there as you don't need to learn the HTML tags that control formatting etc, you just use the hopefully familiar formatting tools in Word.

If you search for "web pages" in Word's help facility, there's a bunch of stuff

Bear in mind you'll still need to face the challenge of getting it online at some point and if P Jr wants to start embedding games etc, that's an extra step... not difficult but requires you to have learnt to walk before the running begins

I know its very limited,I only did it as a bit of fun really nothing serious just thought it might get him going quickly.
I lost the old one a few months ago and the young one is too daft to work but has a great temperament which is quite unusual for a GSP.

micro$oft publisher can make basic web pages

and also they do Frontpage which is quite good of making site, as you just can put the text on the page and it does all the converting to HTML ect

Frontpage is the work of the devil
