Home Cinema Speakers

Time to call on the wide knowledge of this group...

My front centre speaker has died so I need a new one, I also want to change my rear speakers for flush ceiling mounted units. I don't want to break the bank and just want something at a reasonable cost that will give good sound quality. Will admit up front I know little about speakers and bought my current setup as a package.

Currently have a Denon 5.1 amp/receiver that is 5 years old with Denon speakers and a Mirage sub. In the past have been mulling bewteen switching to small bose units bit not sure they would be as good as 'full size' speakers.

I was Chatting to Kaine not so long ago about having some ceiling speakers fitted part of and full home audio system. Kaine said maybe i should go for these http://www.yamaha-uk.com/sound_projectors/ save cutting up all the wall and half the ceiling to fit these speakers

Meant to be very good and save having a room full of speakers all you do is site it under the TV and i think it even set's itself up to your room!? Thumbs Up RRS TDV6 Gone but still around

Thanks Jay....

Would need to see and hear one to believe that one box can do the job of 6 - particulaly a good sub woofer! Hate to think what the $ price is down under if it's the usual inflated price over other markets.

Would also be interested to understand whether or not I would need to be concerned about a lack of ability to go to 7.2 as I noticed the latest Yamaha amps now offer this... Is this just a gimmick or is it going to become the new defacto?

Yeah i know not sure myself as i've not herd them but they do win a lot of stuff from the Mag's and that so they must be good?

7.1 sounds like the way to go but how many films have 7.1? is it worth the upgrade just yet? RRS TDV6 Gone but still around

Try Paradigm

Paradigm do some really nice speakers in wall/ceiling at a very reasonable cost (less expensive then bose and much fuller sound). They should be available in reasonable audio shops - probably not Harvey Norman though. Check their web - www.paradigm.com

Just got the Yamaha YSP4000 and installed it yesterday. It is awesome, altho' I will probably add the matching sub shortly. Have a really akward room where traditional surround speaker placement would have been a challenge without getting into the walls. Also, nice to have the amp built in, so all you see is TV and speaker bar. 2011 BMW X3 35i Carbon Black

Sounds nice! Thumbs Up

But then all of the demo shop installs of such things look nice.. What about if you have other compenents than TV - i.e. DVD, receiver (I also have a cassete deck still although v. rarely used) that would need to be connected, so would still have wires unless I went into the wall?!

Connected my DVD player and Sat. T.V. receiver, and should be able to connect 2 more components. It has its own radio tuner and amp built in. Also has the ability to connect with an IPOD dock and Sat. radio. Using an entertainment wall unit so all wires are concealed. Did not see the unit at any store, but bought on the strength of several very positive online reviews. Very pleased so far. 2011 BMW X3 35i Carbon Black

The YSP technology is very good - I run an original YSP1 at home, plus spec and fit all the new YSP's when the application doesn't really allow for cabling. HOWEVER, if cabling is possible, then the YSP isn't the best option. The surround sound effects are virtual and are very dependant on the room shape and acoustic's - if your used to a good 'defined' surround sound image then you probably wont be that impressed, however if your used to a budget surround sound setup then the YSP is excellent.

We've started using Monitor Audio recently as they are pricing themselves very competitively and their hardware is excellent. Alternatively, without knowing what you mean by not breaking the bank, you could also look at the Jamo D6 or even D7 speakers - extremely capable Home Cinema speakers at very low price. Finally I would also take a look at the M&K Xenon speakers - combine them with something like a Sunfire HRS-8 Sub and you'd never want to buy again

re: BOSE

the small satellite speaker option serves a purpose - and thats aesthetics. Having small speakers means the sub unit has to deal with a lot more frequencies than what it should do - this makes the mid to low range sound lose definition imo - personally unless SWMBO wanted tiny speakers or nothing then I'd go for something like the BOSE (however I'd actually go for the Monitor Audio R45's as they are a fraction of the price)

Next time you are in town, stop in at Clef Hi Fi in Clarendon St South Melbourne and speak to Chris. Clef is at the intersection of Dow St and Clarendon St right side as you are heading into town. He is an installer and is great to talk to about this stuff. He will give you his time and advice and doesn't pressure you to buy anything. The downstairs listening room is also a good way to while away an hour or two......
