i use this for everything (HP Pavillion HDX):

...but portability is low on my list of requirements and i dont walk much so get away with it .

I hear the rock direct laptops are good but arent the cheapest! (i almost bought one but the 20" screen on this baby suckered me in when i saw it in person)

I always go for Dell personally, good kit and the post-sales support is good - indeed XPS owners get their own support line. The one you showed an example of is perfect. The XPS laptops are particularly suitable as they are designed specifically for gaming and have lots of grunt. The wireless connectivity is an incidental of course, but will suit you down to the ground. Only downside of them is that they're damn heavy for laptops, but they're packed full of kit so hardly surprising.

Also, a quick warning: beware spec'ing 4GB RAM on Dells as you never get to see any more that 3.5GB of it due to the way in which Dell deal with memory management, which is a bit of a disappointment if you're a geek.

Sony Vaio all the way....built in conferencing camera, finger print swipe, genuine qwerty keyboard and comes complete with on/off button.

Vista works well with the vaios.

I don't know much about PC's or laptops but for work I bought:

ACER TravelMate 5720
Intel Core 2 DUO processor T7100 (Must have DUO for my work)
1.8 GHz
15.4 WXGA LCD monitor
Mobile Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (Whatever the hell that is)
1GB DDR2 memory (Added extra 1Gb)
120Gb HDD
DVD-Super multi DL/Rewriter
802.11a/b/g WLAN ( )
Bluetooth 2.0+EDR
SD/Memory stick slot
4 x USB sockets
Something called 'Signal Up'
And built in Crystal Eye for video conferencing.

Seems ok for what I need but not particularly sexy looking piece of kit.

My man at John Lewis was clearly not a big Apple fan. I had to force him to show me a few and he dissed them pretty comprehensively for price, poor gaming graphics, costly upgrades, incompatibility with most of the real world. Maybe they are just low margin and/or low commission.

Must admit that the HP unit he sold me gets great on-line reviews and his price was £170 cheaper than the cheapest price I can find on the net. So maybe, just maybe, he did me a good deal.....
