UHF Radio and Antenna Mounting

Has anyone any recommendations and pics as to where the best place to permanently mount a UHF radio on the dashboard?

Also where and how best to mount the antenna on the exterior of the car?

This is how I did it.

The uhf radio I used is a Uniden remote head version. The transmitter is located under the steering wheel on the horizontal panel that drops down just above the pedals. A remote speaker is mounted there as well and sounds just fine. The head unit is in the centre console cubby box. All cables are run under the console.
Everything is out of sight (which was my aim).

Thanks Steve - So how high is the radio antenna when it is connected on top of the roof rack?

I'm looking at getting a GME with all the controls on the handset, and am hoping to hide the transmitter somewhere completely out of sight if at all possible. Was thinking about the glove boxed myself as although I do not have the factory screen i do not want it on the shelf either.

I have a couple of antennas which I use regularly.

The one used most often is this one http://tinyurl.com/3lk7px.

Its only 360mm long and is good in hilly country because of its relatively low gain. There is about another 100mm between the base of the antenna and the roof. It's also 'ground plane independant' so mounting above the roof is not so much of an issue with the radiation pattern.

The antenna is flexible so I don't worry too much about low hanging trees.

I also use a 6bd gain antenna for desert/flat country. Both use the same PL-259 base.
