Hi all,

Just thought I put this out there…………..

Really only testing the water here, but I’m thinking of getting a second camera body & have been checking around.

I currently have a D70 but it has long been replaced by the D80 but I think that if I were to buy I’d just like to have the same model as my current body.

That said though I must try to see what the differences are between the D70 & D80.

I’ve had a look on “Fleabay” but to be honest I don’t know what to make of half of the ones offered & really you are putting a lot of faith in the seller. Never was one for buying on “Fleabay” anyway.

Whereas I think I might be much more trusting of someone on here who might be offloading theirs.

Now, I haven’t fully decided to buy another body yet, but would nonetheless like to check what’s out there. So if anyone has a fresh D70, they might be thinking of selling, I wouldn’t mind finding out condition & prices etc.

I also use the Nikon D70 ( I've always used Nikon - You just don't get better optics) The obvious difference between the D70 & D80 is that the D80 has a 10 megapixel CCD chip and the D70 is a 6.1. Interestingly enough I was talking to a proffessional photographer a few weeks ago about this exact subject and he still reckons the D70 is the better camera and produces better images due to the physical size of the CCD chip. He then got all technical on me and my small brain gave up trying to follow what he was saying But the jist of it was that he wasn't considering swapping the D70 for the D80. Just one other thing, do you have a D70 or D70s? If it is the original D70, have you upgraded the firmware on the camera? There was a new firmware released that cured some annoying autofocus issues and also made the menu system a bit easier to use - Basically upgrades the camera to the "s" spec. You can download it from Nikon's web site (the patche is in 2 seperate Firmware files that you need to download and apply seperately). seriously though, mainly deep space photography (although I'm still on a big learning curve) plus the odd lunar pic (as Jay posted)

Yep the learning curve is very steep still trying to sort out my imaging system and the skies have not been of much help this summer, From June to September I had 2 nights where I could get the scope out for about 1.5 hours in total

I know what you mean on the cloud - we've had quite a bit this summer - however over the last 2 weeks we've had some great nights. I only really get to view the west skies though as east is over a major city (Birmingham).

The irony of using the scope is when I'm out for hours I find myself prefering to watch the skies without the scope/binocs

Kaine, It may be an import but I wouldn't worry about it. Nikon usually have a worldwide warranty so doesn't really matter where it came from.

Just a quick question for you telescope guys. Do you need to have a tracking motor on your scopes so that you can keep a stable image of your stellar targets. eg. If you are trying to follow the Moon for a shot it would be difficult to track it by hand due to the magnification making it move accross the lens fairly quickly? Here in Belgium I have a LX10 8"UHTC but it is not a patch on the LX200R. I have only a small patch of sky I can view at home so I have to go about 10km to find an open space with darkish skies. That's where the 8" comes in as it is a lot easier to transport around.
In Wick during the winter, when it is dark for about 18 hours, I can step out the door and just stop and stare at the stars, the milkyway is like a river, it can be awe inspiring Sons of dogs come hither and get flesh
