Hi all

new member but been browsing for quite a while now. Keep up the good work everyone its one hell of a useful site.

In the process of buying a second hand land rover. but need your opinions on whether to get the FFRR TD6 Vogue or the RRS TDV6 HSE. I know the RRS has better engine + drive, but overall would like peoples opinions on this.

I wana spend around £33-34K and can get either one on an 05/55 plate (although the FFRR I have seen is lower mileage than the RRS which has done around 35K!)

Done a search on this and saw that both DOC and RRUK where both previous RRS or FFRR owners. What do you guys think now that you've swapped cars.

Off course Doc and RRUK are gonna tell you that the FFRR is a better car


Its down to your own personal choice really, if its a nice comfortable car(with all the gadgets) you re after,for cruising then it has to be the FFRR

If its a drivers car you re after with a superb driving position with excellent handling and stylish looks (with some of the gadgets) then it has to be the RRS

I had the same dilemma when buying mine and I test drove both, but the styling and handling did it for me over the FFRR, which looks a bit dated IMHO  some of my Previous cars

As a current RRS TDV6 owner, if I was going to change I'd buy a FFRR now - the RRS is a cracking car, however the FFRR just has an edge on interior quality imho

I ran a FFRR TD6 SE for 2 years before my TDv6RRS SE, and I concur with Doc and Kaine - if you want a nice comfy cruiser then the FF is the one to go for, it DOES have a better quality interior than the RRS but then the BMW TD6 in its FFRR incarnation is not as good as the RRS' PSA derived TDv6 (LR dealers will tell you there is no difference in quality but there is). RRS rolls less in corners (hardly at all if you have Dynamic Pack which 2nd hand cars may have on the spec sheet as the Sports Pack). If you need carrying ability then the FFRR is for you as well - the shape of the RRS hatch isn't as load carrying friendly as the vast cube that is the FFRR's boot. Suspension in the FF simply smoothers road imperfections and potholes whereas you feel the same potholes in an RRS. There are some fine deals on 2003-2006 FFRR's at the moment - I've seen a 50000 miles 2004 TD6 Vogue for sale at £24000 at a main dealer recently, use the money to buy a private plate and nobody will know that your car isn't new, they can hide huge milages very well.
If you are looking at FFRR's don't be fooled into thinking folks don't take them offroad - many do as the car is superb off the metalled road, so take a very careful look underneath - the rear box of the exhaust will be the give-away as it can get scratched and bashed, but also look at the front towing eye (you have to remove a blanking plate to get at it) as that will also show signs of scratching and possibly be caked in mud if the car has been playing.
I like both cars and it is a difficult choice but the TDv6 wins by a very slight margin for me, however I wouldn't turn down a FFRR TD6 if anybody offered me a run out 2006MY one at a decent price. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

SPORT

If you want a sporty feel 4x4 with all the spec you would ever want buy the HSE TDV6 Sport - it delivers no end for a 4x4 and you won't find a 4x4 that handles better, it feels great to drive and has a "solid" almost "carved from a block of lead" feel to it!

The built is a little questionable and has some interesting switches etc from the Ford parts bin such as the XR3i door mirror switch that really p155ed me off!

The engine and gearbox is fine as standard, quiet, smooth but it has some seriously bad flatspots - once re-mapped there all gone and the engine is near perfect

Residuals have been great until late when both the 2007 spec and TDV8 arrived trowing the older spec and TDV6 models a little out of sorts residual wise.

Best advice? MAKE SURE IT HAS A WARRANTY, If you buy a TDV6 get it re-mapped and avoid the Dynamic response equipped cars if possible as it seems to be a painful system to live with, but in the same stroke its what makes the sport a sport if you know what I mean and without it its just and other 4x4.


FFRR

If you want the best 4x4 money can buy with an amazing interior and ride that beats the best luxury saloons in the world (and the best tailgate in the world) go for the FFRR - it really is head and shoulders above the rest.

It does not handle anything like a Sport and its not meant to! The 167 BHP TD6 engine is loud and slow but once re-mapped (again) you can see 230 BHP and this helps a lot!

Residuals are good but not as good as the sports.

Best advice? MAKE SURE IT HAS A WARRANTY, Get it re-mapped and ensure that it has the UPDATED sat nav with the venture cam - not for the cam but the navigation is just miles ahead of the old system and has less problems.

What I miss: About the sport are the handling and the aggressive looks.

What I have gained: Better seats and leather, better build quality, superior navigation, interior lights - a bug bear to any sport owner, a bespoke feel to the cabin, a proper tailgate, heated steering wheel, electric steering column, no electrical gremlins and far more luxury and space all round

To sum it up:

The RRSPORT is the best sporting 4x4 in the world but its no Vogue and was not ever meant to be.

The FFRR is the best 4x4 in the world. (According to LR mag, Top gear etc etc)

Well written Doc. An honest and informative opinion that should be a reference document for future potential buyers asking the same question.  Gone - 2008 TDV8, Stornoway Grey, ebony, zabrano trim, TV, Tasmods, mudflaps.

We were in the same predicament a year ago, FFRR TD6 or RRS TDV6?

Drove both and decided on the Sport hands down.

ENGINE: No comparison, TDV6 wipes the floor for refinement (Very important to us)

INTERIOR: FFRR is streets ahead in quality of materials, ambience and not least space!

DRIVE: As has been said before, if you want comfort orientated 4x4 go for FFRR. I would disagree with DOC about dynamic pack cars UNLESS you are keeping it on non-20" wheels! Ours is non-dynamic on Stormers and having driven Jays TDV6 WITH Dynamic it makes a noticable difference.

LOOKS: I think the lopping off of 6" or so from the length ( ) and height makes the RRS look much sleeker and agressive. I love the FFRR but from some angles I think the glass area looks a little too tall (IMHO!)

All I needed to say has been said, the Sport was great, brilliant, awesome, the Supercharged engine was immensely addictive too, and the handling was so good for such a heavy car.

However, when I swapped to the FFRR Vogue I was not convinced beforehand that I'd love it like the Sport, but, it quickly grew on me. I knew the car already, seen and driven them before and my dads got one, but after a while I realised it had so much over the Sport in so many way.

OK, the handling and speed are different, but this car demands a different drive, you waft along gracefully, and oncce chipped I hear the TD6 is much much better. I don't miss the Sport.

The FFRR has much more presence than the Sport and just looks great, as Landrover themselves once said;

"It not only says you've arrived, it says you'll get home too"

DOC, isnt the Dynamic Response standard on all HSE's on the RRS?? and is it that much of an issue, ie. prone to hinder my experience?

have to say even though Im still relatively young (compared to you oldies! ) I really like the image the Vogue has, its got a hell of a lot of presence on the road, not that the RRS hasnt but the FFRR is something in a league of it's own. I actually havent driven an FFRR as of yet so guess that will make the decision for me, if i dont like it at all. But in terms of the vehicles I've found at the mo, considering I will be selling the car in 2-3 years which do you think is better value and will have better residuals? a RRS HSE 2005 at £33K with 35000 miles on the clock or a FFRR TD6 Vogue 2005 at £33K with about 20'000 miles? both black, privacy glass etc.

With the RRS being the "fresher" model I would expect it to hold it's value better....................... but!
There is always a BUT, there are so many BLACK (like 75% of production so far!) ones on the market that you will have loads of others to compete against price wise even though it is a popular colour now, it may not be so fashionable in 3 years time.
The FFRR has already had a facelift and there are loads of the pre 2006 version now on dealers forecourts as owners trade then in for TDv8's - black is a less common colour for FFRR's (loads of Silver ones) so colour shouldn't count against it, however when you come to sell in 3 years time the car will be long in the tooth, have a less desirable engine and also be about to be replaced by an all new FFRR in 2012.
Also if you are within striking distance of London both of the cars are the target of Red Ken and TFL so will be getting taxed even more as each year goes by making them even more difficult to shift on.

Personally I think there will be a better chance of shifting the FFRR - after all loads more people aspire to the real thing rather than the "Lite" Sport. Also I don't think the FFRR will age so much as the RRS, it is still an elegant vehicle for all it's monster size whereas the RRS doesn't quite have the same timeless grace that even the Classic RR still has. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
