Bish,

Q. As you sound like you know a lot about the latest 9G screens - are any of the screens being manufactured by NEC production facilities at all?

Kaine

Kaine,

From what I've read the 9G Pioneers will all be built in existing Pioneer plants using Pioneer produced glass. But, this may well be only for the 50" and 60" panels as I believe Pioneer will not be making any PDPs in sizes less than 50" after they have sold out of the existing 42" panels. Pio will make a set in the 42" size, it will just be an LCD; (not my cup of tea, but if they get the lcd panel from say Sharp, and then use Pioneer electronics in it, I'm sure it will look good; at least for an lcd! lol).

For the 10G panels, Pio will probably out-source the glass itself to Panasonic, who will then make the panel to Pioneer's specs. This may not be a bad thing in that Pio can then probably markedly lower the price of their plasmas, due to the glass being cheaper. All of the other electronics to be used in the TV are supposed to be Pioneer's, so it should still look fantastic. Also, the 10G panels are reported to be using 10 lumen tech which will markedly increase the brightness at the same time as lowering power consumption. The 9mm think panel should also be available then. Great things to look forward to.

I heard that Pio bought out NEC to they can use their panel and tap in to the cheaper market?

If so they haven't been making their own 42" screen? thinking about it this was around the time they drop the size of the panels from 43" to 42" RRS TDV6 Gone but still around

I have just invested in a 60" LG and it is awesome.

Jonny it has taken me a year to prove to my wife that the 50" is not a problem in our lounge and she now excepts that we could get away with a 60" with no problem. But I wouldnt have anything other than a Pioneer as in this case like the RRS you only get what you pay for.

It's the Pioneer PDP LX508D I'm quite interested in, but the 9g might be out before I'm ready to take the plunge.
Just had to replace the VCR and the freeview box, I got a Pioneer DVR LX70D HDD/DVD recorder with analog & digital tuners, it upscales DVD to 1080p and can record for up to 1400hours Shocked at the house here in Scotland I only have an ancient Ferguson TV so I'm not able to check out the HD side of it yet but the picture looks great and the HDD recorder is way better than the Philips one I have in Belgium. Sons of dogs come hither and get flesh

I see that the Pioneer 42" screens are not 1080p.

Will they do one, or do I not need that? 2022 P440e AB

OK. NOw I'm confused.

Homecinemachoice says that the 42XD is 1080p compatible.
http://www.homecinemachoice.com/cgi-bin/di...iewid=7425

From the pioneer site :-
http://www.pioneer.co.uk/uk/product_compare.jsp

Only the 508D is 1080p...

Main Features PDP-LX508D PDP-508XD PDP-428XD PDP-4280XD
Diagonal Screen Size 50-inch / 127cm 50-inch / 127cm 42-inch / 106cm 42-inch / 106cm

'KURO' Screen Yes Yes Yes Yes

'HD ready 1080p' Yes

HD-ready Yes Yes Yes

So... What to do?

I have the Pio 950HD which has a native resolution of 720p. That means that ALL inputs regardless of whether they are 480i/480p/720p/1080p, etc, are scaled by the plasma to be displayed at 720p. At a typical viewing distance for a 42" screen of say 8 feet, you can not really tell any difference between 720p and 1080p. The 'picture' on my 950HD when feeding it a 1080p source from a HD-DVD or BD player is nothing short of stunning. You will not be disappointed.

Now Panasonic, which I think most people in the know would state make the second best plasma behind the Pioneer Kuros, do have a 1080p 42" panel, but as I said, at a normal viewing distance you won't notice any difference from the resolution; you will notice that the Pioneer produces a 'better' picture with deeper blacks and better contrast because of it.

Most good LCDs these days are 1080p native rate in their 42" models, but then again, it's an LCD! lol. Actually if your room where you are going to have the TV is very bright with lots of windows, a good quality LCD is not a bad idea, especially if you are not viewing it too far off axis.
