4wd trip preparation

I'm planning on going on a 4 day 4wd trip in Snowy Mtns, NSW Australia.

Have been advised to bring the following spares for the trip:
We recommend that you always carry spare radiator hoses, fan and air conditioning belts, fuel filter, 5 litres of engine oil, 1 litre of differential and gearbox oils and 1 litre of brake fluid. A spare air filter is also a good idea and include a selection of spare fuses

Is there anything else a TDV8 sport might need? Any comments on the above list also would be helpful to save carrying anything that is not technically relevant to this car.

A good floor jack (as opposed to the crappy one provided by LR), and base in case you are on soft ground. How good is your current battery? Nothing like a dead battery in the middle of nowhere to cause a problem...maybe a spare.

Good quality Air compressor, tire repair kit, 5 gallons of water per person, 5 gallon diesel can, recovery equipment (snatch straps, d shackles etc, shovel, flashlights or lanterns, 2 pairs of gloves, plastic bags to throw muddy clothes, etc. etc.

Tons of sites on Overlanding or Expeditions can give you good ideas on how to be self-sufficient.

Sounds like a great trip...share some pictures afterwards! Very Happy

I'm going on an organised tagalong so recovery gear is not needed, any suggestions on other RRS spares different to below would be very helpful.

20-50litres of spare fuel,
a full sized spare wheel and tyre

I would also remove the spare from under the car and put it on the roof or in the back - it makes changing a flat so much more pleasant than having to dig it out from the sticky mud you got the flat in! Also while you are under there remove the two wind deflectors from the front of the spare wheel stowage, only to save them from getting ripped off at the first bit of rocky going and also saves you wondering what the hell is getting torn off underneath when if they were still there.

Have you got any aluminium under-body protection plates/ sumpguard fitted?

RE: sump /underbody protection - NO! but the tip to remove the spare wheel cover sounds a good idea.

Has anyone called Land Rover Assist for off road recovery or problems caused off road? I spoke to a Land Rover specialist ( not a dealer ) and he indicated that due to the complexity of the parts listed to carry as spares it would be better to leave it to LR Assist to get you underway.

Laughing Laughing LR assist here in the mountains will be a local NRMA tow-truck back to the closest dealer - I don't believe they are going to be carrying a lot of TDV8 Parts.

Well the trip was a success - the car performed beautifully over sand, gravel, rocks and everything in between over 4 days of very steep and rutted driving in the New South Wales and Victoria High Country.

And the 19" rims and rubber are exactly as they were when we left! ( thank goodness for no damage or punctures! )

Will post a few action shots and trip detail later!

Well - asides from a good supply of snacks to eat at smoko, a thermos for hot water and warm clothes it was a pretty safe trip. Next time would prefer some proper off road tyres instead of praying that the 19" wranglerss would not get punctured on a rocky climb or rim damage ( none luckily ). Does anyone remember who had those 17 or 18" rims for sale?

It was good to discover that the other drivers ( in Toyota's and Pajero's ) could also not buy spares like bottom radiater hoses ( 6-8 weeks from UK on back order from LR ). The best suggestion I heard for building a spares kit is to ask for any old parts when new ones are fitted - eg fan belts, drive belts, filters etc. These may have done the miles but could get you out of difficulty if needed.

We also had a great "bush mechanic" with us, Wayne from Great Divide Tours and I think had the worst came to the worst he could have done a decent enough trail repair.

There was nothing that we brought that was out of the ordinary. The only thing needed was some cable ties to reattach the panel located mid way along under the car ( it's secured by 2 plastic bolts ). This got caught on a few of the larger conservation mounds / water bars on our trip.

For a future trip am looking at getting OZICOZI fitted ( it's a clear film to protect paint ) any forum members got this or had experience?

Hey DMP,

You might want to check first, if your TDV8 is the same as mine, you will have the Brembos fitted, which means that you may be limited to the 19" wheels that you have on there or larger, unless you want to go through some modifications.
