Removing heater plugs hot/cold ? The 5 K resistor.

Having some cold start issues but have not tested the heater plugs yet but suspect 2 or 3 not working.
I know they can break off so whats the advice on removing them .

I know the P38 had starting issues and the solution was a 1k resistor in series with the temp sensor. This made the ECU think the engine was colder than it actually was and it increased fuel.

Now putting a 5K across the sensor ( Parallel) in the 2.7l would make it think its hotter than it is ( and boiling water trick) so I don get that ....

any thoughts.
PS a mini 12v timer set for 1 min to switch out the resistor would be the easy way to do it Always listen to old people or when they die you will live on in ignorance.

Can of Easy Start in the boot, knock a little bit when it fires up though Laughing or you could fit a ether starts system like they use to fit to Cummins engines.

Your best bet long term is to use the cars fbh to pre warm the engine and defrost your car long before you want to use it via a simple remote and over ride device.

I fitted 1 to our d3 tdv6 due to 5 out of 6 glow plugs being dead and would not shift when I tried to replace them.

20 mins or so before wanting to use the car I just pressed a button on a remote it would fire up the fbh warm the engine and defrost the car and give me instant heat when I turned the hevac on.

Watched a video on LR time showing how he failed to get any of the glow plugs out so I decided on this .......Measure the current drawn by each side at the fuse for each bank to get an idea of how many are working . any one know how much current they draw ?
Then go for the resistor method if changing the temp sensor does not work and fit a 1min timer to automatically connect and disconnect the resistor .

Poland 2011 Range Rover Sport 3.0 TDV6 HSE Lux Fuji White

I changed glow plugs on a 2.7 TDV6 LR3. Four of the six glow plugs broke. Managed to get them all out with some major time and effort via a few extraction kits. Had to pull the LH inlet manifold off and remove an injector on the right side when the tip fell into the cylinder (retrieved with a magnet). I don’t envy anybody doing that job. The new glow plugs were like my 3.0 TDV6 with thicker walls. Installed them with lots of copper spray. 2011 RRS HSE Luxury 3.0 TDV6 Fuji White on Ebony/Ivory
Born and raised in So Cal. Moved to the UK in 2018 for a few years. Now in Poland and looking at moving back to the UK.

Hi,

using the FBH I think is only a short term fix for cold starts as the GP's are used quite a lot for varying amounts of time both before the engine starts and are still on after the start has happened,
so your fueling will not be correct by fooling the EM with a resister or by just using the fbh.

I tried 2 or 3 different resisters in series (I think Rolling Eyes ) but temp gauge either hit max or never moved off min, so never helped my 2.7 start when around zero degrees

The best option is really to replace the GP's I used CDS off D3 side of life and he changed the lot, also replaced the relays, the right tools make a big difference, vibro gun, if they do snap (none of mine did) he has the gear to sort that as well.

It is a cost, but are you just putting off the "Sound of inevitability" Laughing

Making water temp hotter works.
Ppl put a button in the cab, to switch that resistor in. Works.

Or a remote FBH start on when you aren’t in a hurrry

As ever, the best approach is to do the correct job correctly. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

I refer to my previous answer ........to many horror stories doing the glow plugs when a simply 10 minute fix attaching the remote fbh device solves the problem warms the car and defrost it at the same time. As long as you remember to switch it on 15/20 mins before you want to use the car your good to go.

I'm aware the gp are used not only for cold starting but during normal operation and driving but I never suffered any ill effects nor did the all the other d3 rrs owners who fitted it.

Well some ppl have to pay £700 to get them changed.
If the car is only worth £3K (old disco) and given the number of cold days in location is it worth it ?

Money can be spent on other maintenance

The glow plugs aren't just used for cold starting, they're used to control emissions and help the thing run when the engine is idling and cold.

But everyone has their own take on what is worth doing, so if one wants to bodge then bodge away. Just remember to tell anyone that might buy it later that it's been bodged. Thumbs Up

(I get a bit miffed about such things - an old boss of mine had a car he wanted to sell on but it had an airbag light on. So it was bodged to make the light go away (literally). Great, he gets to sell it but the buyer isn't aware that a critical safety system isn't working - potentially with fatal consequences. Yes, glow plugs aren't the same thing, but the principle is the same. It just rankles with me.) 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
