cant see anything in the service book or operating manual.

im going to guess that its a breather of some sort, but have often wondered the same myself. The top part unscrews. I wondered if it was a diff breather for when crossing deep water but could be totally wrong Laughing 2003 BMW M5 - 5 Litres of V8 Optimax Slurping Goodness in Carbon Black

diff breather is on the other side of the engine bay between coolant hoses


yes the top twists off.
i didn't trace the pipe back down into the engine bay.... yet Laughing 2007 TDV6 RRS HSE..now gone

i was half hoping this is what it was for

would be noce to have a little test point to look at the engine oil now and again.... the simple thinks in life Laughing 2007 TDV6 RRS HSE..now gone

United Kingdom 2013 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Ipanema Sand

It’s on a bayonet fitting and is for vacuuming the oil from the sump. Great way to change the oil, it takes about 5 mins to suck it all out with a good vacuum pump and 10 mins to complete the job with new filter too.

Some people feel removing the sump plug gets more oil out, it doesn’t this way gets just as much.

PS the oil needs to be hot. Thumbs Up

You can see where the pick up point is once your under it. it's next to the sump plug so will extract all but the smallest amount of oil. and as we don't flush the engine oil then what does it matter if a small amount is left....
