ANOTHER starts and dies thread but with a clue...

Good morning all

Firstly my apologies for starting with a technical, not great I know (I did also add to the welcome thread too!).

Anyway I collected my beautiful 2010 TDV8 on Saturday and swooshed home with an enormous grin on my face.

Got up Sunday to take it out and was immediately greeted with, what I have since learned is, a 'starts and dies' issue.

Basic starting procedure:

- Foot firmly on brake
- Hold down Start button until engine started
- Remove finger
- Engine idles

What happened:

- Foot firmly on brake
- Hold down Start button until engine started
- Engine immediately dies

I repeated 10 times (i was desperate!) and eventually it starts.

Once warm no issues and actually after sat for a couple of hours still fine.

What I tried today (here's the clue):

- Turn on ignition
- Wait a few secs
- Foot firmly on brake
- Hold down Start button until engine started
- Remove finger
- Engine idles

So issue seems to be to do with quick starts from cold?

It's got 100k on the clock so could it be old glow-plugs?

Any other ideas?

Thank you all in advance.

Will

P.s.

When I say this:

What I tried today (here's the clue):

- Turn on ignition
- Wait a few secs
- Foot firmly on brake
- Hold down Start button until engine started
- Remove finger
- Engine idles

I did it straight after it failed once...I.e. seemed to work if I gave it a few seconds...

Just had a long read of this thread:

https://www.rrsport.co.uk/forum/topic20008-45.html

And member 'Old Stager' tried what I did:

'I've had a further development with my cold starting problem. Basically, it has started first time for the last two mornings, temps -2 and -9 respectively Very Happy . This is a massive step forward and here's what I've done differently: instead of following the instructions in the handbook, I have turned the ignition on without pressing the brake, waited for the glowplug light to go out, then pressed the brake & the start button. It starts first time, with almost no delay for a "cold start procedure". I repeat, this is NOT how the handbook tells you to start the car (but it's how I've started every other diesel I've ever had) Exclamation'

My question to other MY10 TDV8 owners is: what cold start procedure do you follow Question

Then was ultimately fixed by:

'Just a quick update (& hopefully the final post on this subject). Had the RRS back from the stealer today, after 3 days in their workshop. Replaced a glowplug relay and they say they're 'confident the problem is solved''

Sound's very similar...

There may be some very clever stuff in more modern diesels but my 2008 TDV8 with no fancy start needs me to turn on the ignition key, wait 4 or 5 seconds until the light goes out then start it. As diesels don't have a choke, this would seem to me to be the way to get it to start from cold. Appreciate what has been said about what's in the handbook, but it doesn't make sense to me that it would easily just fire up from cold. Robin

In the 'keyless' (2010+?) RRS, the "Cold Start Procedure" does exactly what you just said - except automatically for you.

If I jump in mine with the engine warm and hit the start button then it will fire up instantly (assuming my foot is on the brake), if it's stone cold then the dash shows "Cold Start Procedure" and waits a few seconds before spinning over on the starter - those few seconds are the ECU switching the glow plugs on and waiting for the (invisible) light to go out. 2014 BMW 530d Touring, 2006 BMW 650i, 2018 Mini Cooper S

Aha! Now that makes sense. So does the OPs one do that? Robin

Never had that issue,, but I never keep the start button pressed until it starts.
Foot on brake
Press start for a couple of seconds and release
If it's cold glow plugs will warm for a few Seconds
Once started release brake

Never fails,,, unless your battery is flat 2010 RRS, TDV8
