How to avoid a flat battery

Hmmm. Just a few words to help any others as stupid as me. Wanted to pump up the tyres on my bike and being lazy, decided to use the electric pump I carry in the RRS. Used the power socket in the boot and it worked just fine once I had turned on the ignition - just to the first position you understand so that there was power in the rear socket.
A few hours later, I couldn't find my car keys. Then remembered they were still in the car. Ok. Retrieved them, went to lock it and - nothing happened. Battery was as flat as a pancake. Only one year old and just 3 volts showing.
Now with any normal car you just recharge and that's it. But this is an RRS so PANIC. So I put it on charge. Do I disconnect the battery like the instructions say or leave everything connected? I decided that the minimum disruption was best and so just connected up the charger.
Tried it after 2 hours. Not a sausage. Tried again after 5 hours and miracle of miracles, it started.
So then I started to look for what damage had been done. All the dashboard lights looked normal! Thumbs Up Clock had reset but I sorted that. There were no radio stations but then they just started retuning themselves. Took it for a 40 minute run and all seems ok. Turned it off, and the a bit later took it out for another run. Still ok!!! It's on trickle charge as I write this.
Touch wood, no issues.
The moral of this story is that there are an awful lot of electrical stuff you switch on when you turn the key so be careful how long you leave it on. Robin

Hi,
every day is a school day, as long as you learn from it Thumbs Up

you don't mention How you connected the charger Question but best not to connect directly to the battery terminal posts

trickle charge via a tow socket is good

Ok to connect the positive direct but negative should be clamped to an earth and not the negative battery post....that's my understanding.
Please correct me if I'm wrong..... Visitor from fullfatrr.com

I'm sure I read that somewhere but by o-level physics says " what's the difference?" So I just connected to the terminals Embarassed Embarassed
Fingers crossed tomorrow when I try to start it! Robin

People just worry about things sparking near battery vapors and causing an explosion

hopefully the battery vent pipe is connected anyway

Yep no different to any other car - there is nothing mystical about the RRS if you leave the ignition on in any position and charging the battery is exactly the same as any other car. It is easier to put the negative lead of the charger on the body post rather than try to get at the -ive on the battery but all else is the same.

Riverblanche - on a slight aside - I have two tow sockets fitted (and presumably wired) but have never towed. I believe one is for lighting and the other is for power to say a caravan. Which I would use to trickle charge? And is there a note somewhere about wiring up a plug for this? Robin

White plug for power.

Pin 3 earth
Pin 4 +

The plug in the shop is suitable if you have a CTEK charger.

If you have a normal charger you can get a plug off ebay (a 12S) for a couple of quid.
